Dirty Water, Deadly Water

January 10, 2016 10:20 am

"On Jan. 5, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder declared a state of emergency in Flint and Genesee County, where lead in the area’s drinking water has been showing up at toxic levels in the bloodstreams of children. The water became toxic because of a decision by the government Snyder runs." http://goo.gl/mxpkm2

"Less than three weeks after Flint’s water was declared safe and in compliance with the Safe Water Act, news leaked that researchers at Virginia Tech University had found traces of lead within Flint’s water. An official press conference held on September 15th confirmed these tests at a local Flint church. The water found in some homes was three times the federal limit of lead within water. Aged lead pipes and lead soldering found in pipes are common throughout the city, not only in city lines, but also in people’s homes, and has been for years. But why is the lead a problem now? It’s the corrosive Flint River that released the lead into the water." From the documentary, Undrinkable http://goo.gl/iWjlBV

I don't know if kids are routinely tested for it or not - they might be in cities, because of lead paint that was routinely used in older buildings.

Ah I see, just can't believe it's been known about for so long without a solution being forced. Thank goodness your kids are routinely tested there for lead. Or so I think. I know my American childcare providers have mentioned their daycare children need to be tested as part of the routine.

Since this isn't a natural disaster, I don't think FEMA has jurisdiction. It falls under the EPA, and possibly the CDC/NIH. We do love our acronyms!

That was very good actually. Gees how can there not be a solution? Why wouldn't FEMA be involved?

This is an excellent documentary, produced by high school students. The narrators aren't very good, but the film IS, so struggle through listening to them. It's about 26 minutes long.
