Walter Cronkite - was an American broadcast journalist who served as anchorman for the CBS Evening News for 19 years (1962–1981). During the 1960s and 1970s, he was often cited as "the most trusted man in America" after being so named in an opinion poll. He reported many events from 1937 to 1981, including bombings in World War II; the Nuremberg trials; combat in the Vietnam War; Watergate; the Iran Hostage Crisis; and the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, civil rights pioneer Martin Luther King Jr., and Beatles musician John Lennon. He was also known for his extensive coverage of the U.S. space program, from Project Mercury to the Moon landings to the Space Shuttle. Cronkite is known for his departing catchphrase, "And that's the way it is", followed by the date of the broadcast.

Walter Cronkite announces death of JFK

CBS anchor Walter Cronkite announced the death of President Kennedy on November 22, 1963

I've read two books about Walter Cronkite. The first was Cronkite's War: His World War II Letters Home. Twenty-three years old and newly married, Cronkite was sent to England as a war correspondent. This story is told by his grandson, Walter Cronkite IV, with excerpts from the letters Cronkite sent his wife. The second, much longer book was Cronkite by Douglas G. Brinkley. Even though this was a long book it was very good.

The Detroit News - is one of the two major newspapers in the U.S. city of Detroit, Michigan. The paper began in 1873, when it rented space in the rival Detroit Free Press's building. The News absorbed the Detroit Tribune on February 1, 1919, the Detroit Journal on July 21, 1922, and on November 7, 1960, it bought and closed the faltering Detroit Times. However, it retained the Times' building, which it used as a printing plant until 1975, when a new facility opened in Sterling Heights. The Times building was demolished in 1978. The street in downtown Detroit where the Times building once stood is still called "Times Square."
