Turnip (Turnip carving finds its roots in Irish folklore. The turnips are named after a malicious man named Jack who did a deal with the devil and lost. As a result, Jack ended up left to wander the Earth, locked out of heaven, barred from hell. To taunt Jack even further, Satan handed Jack an eternal ember to guide him on his way. Jack carved a turnip and placed the ember inside, using it to lure tired travelers into grave dangers in swampy areas. In the 19th century, Irish immigrants took the tradition of turnip carving with them to the USA where pumpkins were soon discovered. Not only were they more aesthetically pleasing, they also happened to be a lot easier to carve. The rest is history)

The turnip in the picture below comes from the collections of the Museum of Country Life in Ireland. Open since 2001 and situated in Turlough Village, it also happens to be the only national museum outside of Dublin.........

Joanna Brady - is the protagonist of a series of mystery novels by author J. A. Jance, centered on the small desert town of Bisbee, Arizona. Joanna starts out as a mother of a 9-year-old Jenny and the wife of Andy Brady, who runs for Sheriff of Cochise County but is killed before the election and is then accused of being dirty. Joanna runs in his stead, clears his name, and wins the election to become sheriff, even though she does not have much background in law enforcement. On one hand, many people in the community are not used to having a woman in a position of power, which makes her job as sheriff somewhat more difficult, but, on the other hand, her relative independence from the old-boy network of local law enforcement makes it easier for her to clean house there as needed.

There 19 books in this series. Sheriff Brady is now in her third term as sheriff. She has remarried and has two children from that marriage to Butch, a bartender turned author and stay-at-home dad. Her daughter Jenny is now a sophomore at Northern Arizona University. I've been reading this series since about 1996.

First book (1993) Desert Heat

Most recent (2021) Missing and Endangered
