Uniform - A school uniform is a uniform worn by students primarily for a school or otherwise an educational institution. They are common in primary and secondary schools in various countries. An example of a uniform would be requiring button-down shirts, trousers for boys and blouses, pleated skirts for girls, with both wearing blazers. A uniform can even be as simple as requiring collared shirts or restricting color choices and limiting items students are allowed to wear.

Students attending Catholic schools in the Louisville archdiocese are required to wear uniforms. At St. Patrick's (grade K-8) the girls are required to wear a specific plaid jumper. Pictures of granddaughter Mary - kindergarten and this year 8th grade. BTW ... she's 5'8" now.

Grandson Jacob is in high school at Trinity - all boys school. They are required to wear a button-down shirt with a tie and khakis. At St. Patrick's he was required to wear pretty much the same but without the tie.

Virtual Learning Environment ((VLE) in educational technology is a web-based platform for the digital aspects of courses of study, usually within educational institutions. They present resources, activities, and interactions within a course structure and provide for the different stages of assessment. VLEs also usually report on participation and have some level of integration with other institutional systems. In North America, VLEs are often referred to as Learning Management Systems (LMS). For teachers and instructors who edit them, VLEs may be used as authoring and design environments. VLEs have been adopted by almost all higher education institutions in the English-speaking world)

Welcome Freshmen - is an American comedy series that aired on Nickelodeon from February 16, 1991, to February 19, 1994. The show took place at Hawthorne High School with a group of high school students and a bumbling vice principal. The earlier episodes of the series (Seasons 1 and 2) consisted of comedy sketches that loosely followed a theme, each episode had two or three short skits about the gang's misadventures in high school. In the later episodes (Seasons 3 and 4), the sketch comedy format was abandoned and Welcome Freshmen became a standard sitcom.

Comment: I found the music in the opening to be very irritating. But then I'm 71 years old. wink

Zhongkao (The Senior High School Entrance Examination, commonly known as the zhongkao (Chinese: ??), is the high school entrance examination held annually in the Mainland China. Taken by junior high school graduates, the exam is used for entrance into almost all education institutions at the senior high school level, such as regular senior high schools (????), trade schools (??) and vocational high schools. The exam is mostly organised at a provincial level, which gives rise to a great variety of content and difficulty. Before the Senior High School Entrance Examination, many provinces will hold two simulation exams (called the first/second preliminary exam, or ??/??), and some provinces mandate three practice examinations. The Senior High School Entrance Examination problems are usually made by province, but few provinces delegate the power of creating problems to cities. In 1980, the decades when the exams were recovered, the Graduation Examination of Junior High School and the Senior High School Entrance Examination were the same exam. If the students failed the Senior High School Entrance Examination, then they could not graduate from the junior high school, even if there was a senior high school that would admit them. These students were refused by all senior high schools because of "failure in graduation from junior high school" (????), which is what is commonly called “sending back the document” (??). However some places had a system to makeup the Senior High School Entrance Examination. Since mid-1990s, the Graduation Examination of Junior High School has become separated from the Senior High School Entrance Examination, but some provinces and cities (such as Shanghai) the two exams are still combined. This exam is the second examination system recovered after the Cultural Revolution. It takes place in early June every year, however in few place it takes place in late June or even early July)

Active Shooter Training ((sometimes termed active shooter response training or active shooter preparation) addresses the threat of an active shooter by providing awareness, preparation, prevention, and response methods. Organizations such as businesses, places of worship or education, choose to sponsor active shooter training in light of a concern that as of 2013, 66.9% of active shooter incidents ended before police arrival in the United States. The Department of Justice says they remain "committed to assist training for better prevention, response, and recovery practices involving active shooter incidents" and they encourage training for civilians as well as first responders. Although training is currently optional, businesses and organizations are beginning to face citations due to non-compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines regarding workplace violence. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) further stresses that civilian training and exercises should include: ‘an understanding of the threats faced and also the risks and options available in active shooter incidents. Much analysis has been done on the techniques and methods of active shooters. In response to the data, some training programs include a focus on medical response for civilians, whereas other training programs place their attention on prevention, self defense, security of the building, escape during the event, psychology or physical escape. Common ideologies frequently taught are "Run/Hide/Fight" as put forth by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), "Avoid, Deny, Defend" which was developed by the ALERRT center at Texas State University, "ALICE" which is an acronym for "Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate" offered by Navigate 360, and "STAAAT" or "Situational Threat Awareness, Assessment, and Action Training" developed by Security Advisors Consulting Group. There are differing viewpoints on the effectiveness of certain concepts, and the standards are constantly being updated with new data and methods)

So true and so sad. My son has talked about this. When he was in school (he's 50 now) they had drills for fire, tornados and train wrecks with chemical spills. (Something I wasn't aware of but makes sense since the railroad track ran alongside the school.) Now it's active shooter training. It's just a crazy world we're living in.

Cliques (in the social sciences, is a group of individuals who interact with one another and share similar interests rather than with others. Interacting with cliques is part of normative social development regardless of gender, ethnicity, or popularity. Although cliques are most commonly studied during adolescence and middle childhood development, they exist in all age groups. They are often bound together by shared social characteristics such as ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Examples of common or stereotypical adolescent cliques include athletes, nerds, and "outsiders". Typically, people in a clique will not have a completely open friend group and can, therefore, "ban" members if they do something considered unacceptable, such as talking to someone disliked. Some cliques tend to isolate themselves as a group and view themselves as superior to others, which can be demonstrated through bullying and other antisocial behaviors)

Design Thinking - The Design Thinking process, from Stanford University, involves five steps: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test. In classrooms, students can learn to solve problems, invent, and create solutions by using the same process as the world’s inventors and thinkers. All forms of professional design education can be assumed to be developing design thinking in students, even if only implicitly, but design thinking is also now explicitly taught in general as well as professional education, across all sectors of education. Design as a subject was introduced into secondary schools' educational curricula in the UK in the 1970s, gradually replacing and/or developing from some of the traditional art and craft subjects, and increasingly linked with technology studies. This development sparked related research studies in both education and design. In the K–12 education sector, design thinking is used to enhance learning and promote creative thinking, teamwork, and student responsibility for learning. A design-based approach to teaching and learning has been developed more widely throughout education.
