I am bone-weary after transporting, what feels like, all over creation for the items on my list... I try to check in on Penny with my amulet, but she must be distracted trying to find her own list of items... I look at Smoke who doesn't seem the least bit tired and nod my head indicating I'm ready for our last transport to the Elven Forest.... We meet up with Ilreth and hand over the stuffed bag of "goodies"  hoping the Elves are closer to finding a vaccination for the deadly poison... Ilreth asks me about Penny and I shrug my shoulders, telling him that we had split up to save time, secretly thankful that we did not try to do the whole list as one team... As tired as I am, I don't know if I would have had the stamina to search for all of it without taking a break.... I suspect that Ayla would not want to transport using their rings, but would rather they ride their horses to each location which means it might take them several days to finish their quests...

Smoke and I make our last transport to my room and I fall on the bed in total exhaustion... Smoke asks me if I want something to eat as he is famished... I make an off hand comment that I'm sure Opel has a bone or two he can "wolf" down which prompts a sigh from Smoke.. I try to laugh but am too tired to manage much more than a lop-sided smile..

Right before I fall asleep, the Golden Queen tells me that she has something important to tell me..

<NOW?!, Can't it wait?!>

<You're going to be turning 17 soon>

<How do you... oh, nevermind.. you were there when I was born... What's so important about turning 17?>

<It  will be time for you to take your rightful place in Pern... You need to learn to be my rider..>

<Yep, I'll get riiiiiiiiiight on that... aaaaany minute now>

<It can wait till tomorrow, get some rest and good breakfast and we'll start your training in the morning>

Oh, this should be "good".. can't wait... thousands of feet up in the air... no safety net.. and the only way this could go wrong is: IMMEDIATELY.... Fortunately, I'm too tired to care and drift into a deep sleep... I swear I hear the Queen laughing in my dreams...

I look at the sun and take a guess at the time, the yellow orb is still pretty high so I figure some time after noon. I can just barely make out Ayla in the distance but the deep voice of the Amazon reaches my ears.  I guess it's not going well for her either, I don't know what these plants are used for but they don't want to contribute to the potion.  I adjust my grip on the small traveling ax that I carry and give it another furious whack.   "Ouch!" I look at my arm and just a couple on inches above my wrist I see a needle like spike. Ayla has her sword in her hand and makes her way towards me. I wave her back, "It's okay, just a run in with a thorn." The sword finds it's way back into it's sheath and she turns away.  In the next second I find I have a couple more sticking out of my arm.  "What in the world is going on?" I spin around looking for my attacker.  All I see are an angry mob of hummingbirds.  Wait, hummingbirds don't have stingers.

Finally I catch a better look, these birds are a bit bigger then I'm used to and if my eyes aren't playing tricks on me they have a small rider on their backs.  Then I notice the tiny bow and arrows in their hands. I hold up my hands in surrender, there's no way I'm going to fight these cuties. "Is there a problem, ladies?" One gets right in front of my nose, arrow pointed at the tip.  I don't see her lips move but I can hear in my head, 'Oh great, my favorite way of communicating.' I explain to them that I need this plant for the Elves to make a potion to cure a poison that has been discovered by the death of a friend. They start buzzing around my head, making it hard to keep my eyes on them. Are they about to finish the attack, have they not noticed the giant looking in our direction.  I hear the command to follow and I start obediently following the fluttering army.

Ayla hears her companion's query and sees her hands in the air, just standing there.  She gives a snort, no wonder it takes so long to get anything done, that girl is constantly stopping to complain about one thing or another. Putting the last plant in her bag, she starts to make her way over, just as Penny turns away and starts to walk slowly in another direction. Hands still in the air, occasionally dodging here and there as if to miss something or swat something away.  Ayla stops for a minute, maybe the girl has finally lost her mind, it wouldn't surprise her one bit.  She reaches for her traveling telescope and raises to her eye and quickly lowers it. A second later, it's back in place.  Before her she finally sees why the girl's hand are up and occasionally moving, she is be escorted by mini warriors on hummingbirds.  It went against her nature but she just had to give a quick chuckle, it shamed her a bit that she was starting to soften some being around these people.  There was no way around it, she had to get back on the trail of the Wise Dragon.  An Amazon Warrior, did not chuckle. Definitely not!
