Roots first aired on ABC in January 1977. It is an American television miniseries based on Alex Haley's 1976 novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family. Roots received 37 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and won nine. It also won a Golden Globe and a Peabody Award. It received unprecedented Nielsen ratings for the finale, which still holds a record as the third-highest-rated episode for any type of television series, and the second-most watched overall series finale in U.S. television history. It was produced on a budget of $6.6 million.

Theodore Roosevelt sworn in as President after McKinley’s death on Sept. 14, 1901. On September 6, 1901, President McKinley was attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York when he was shot by Leon Czolgosz. Roosevelt was vacationing in Vermont, and traveled to Buffalo to visit McKinley in the hospital. It appeared that McKinley would recover, so Roosevelt resumed his vacation in the Adirondacks. When McKinley's condition worsened, Roosevelt again traveled to Buffalo. McKinley died on September 14, and Roosevelt was informed while he was in North Creek; he continued on to Buffalo and was sworn in as the nation's 26th president at the Ansley Wilcox House. At the time, he had only been Vice President for six months.

Vietnam War demonstrators disrupt 1972 Republican National Convention. Delegates entering the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach on Aug. 22, 1972 were harassed by 3,000 antiwar demonstrators, many painted with death masks. The rest of the convention was marked by demonstrations outside the meeting hall; hundreds of protestors were arrested and many were injured when police use riot-control agents.

X-rays discovered November 8, 1895. A form of high-energy electromagnetic radiation, X-rays were discovered by German scientist Wilhelm Röntgen, who produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range known as X-rays or Röntgen rays. He named it X-radiation to signify an unknown type of radiation. Spelling of X-ray(s) in the English language includes the variants x-ray(s), xray(s), and X ray(s). In many languages, X-radiation is referred to as Röntgen radiation. This achievement earned him the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.

Zager and Evans “In the Year 2525” hits number one on Billboard Hot 100 – July 12, 1969. Zager and Evans was a US rock-pop duo of the late 1960s and early 1970s. They are best known for their No. 1 hit single "In the Year 2525", which earned them one-hit wonder status. "In the Year 2525" hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969, ultimately claiming the top spot for six weeks. "2525" topped the charts at the time of two major cultural events: the first moon landing on July 20, 1969 and the Woodstock Music Festival a month later. The record sold over four million copies by 1970 and was awarded a gold disc by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in July 1969.
