Army of the Universe - 1999 and the Aftershow (Metropolis)
Imagine, if you will, the retro sound of the 1980s (both new wave and punk) being given the Terrorfakt treatment. For those of you unfamiliar with Terrorfakt, think of Lou Reed’s “Metal Machine Music”, only not as nasty. Accessible songs made inaccessible by a barrage of distortion. Drums, guitar, bass, keyboards all distorted to one degree or another. Vocals not so much.
This treatment takes what could have been a commercial CD and, instead, DARES you to listen to it and appreciate what it is handing to you. It removes the grunge affect of these four instruments and instead gives you a kick in the face. Or at least to the ears.
This would have been a good retro CD without the distortion, but this treatment took their music to a totally different level. A level that only those initiated in danger will appreciate.
