Little India gets a touch of China

No, you're not in Chinatown but Little India.

China nationals are being hired by more eateries there. A check with 15 restaurants in the area found that 11 of them have done so.

The owners told The Sunday Times that the Chinese workers are usually hired as cleaners rather than service staff because of the language barrier. Most are work permit holders, speak little English, work an average of 10 hours a day and earn about $1,000 a month.

The Little India restaurant owners said they had to turn to Chinese workers because of the labour crunch.

Mr Selvan Anbalagan, 37, who runs vegetarian restaurant Chellas in Serangoon Road, said Singaporeans are not keen to work in Indian restaurants here.

The seven Singaporean waiters working in his restaurant are all part-timers.

So when China nationals were allowed to work in the service industry two years ago, he hired two of them. They do the washing and cleaning.

He explained: 'To be a waiter means being able to speak English as customers may want to know more about the menu. So language is a problem.'

Mr G. Shanmugam, president of the Indian Restaurant Association of Singapore, pointed out that its members want to hire Indian nationals, but they can hire only those holding an S-pass or employment pass.

This means an employer seeking an Indian waiter might need to hire someone with relevant qualifications and a minimum wage of $1,800 under current regulations.

The result is that most restaurants would prefer to hire Indian nationals as chefs under the S-pass.

Mr Shanmugam, who owns Gayatri Restaurant, said most customers have been receptive to the China nationals.

'But some customers ask us why we are not giving jobs to local Indians,' said Mr Shanmugam, who has two workers from China. They do the cleaning at his restaurant in Race Course Road.

China workers interviewed said they did not choose to work in Indian restaurants here. It was arranged by their agents.

(kojakbt: just go figure where the money these Chinese workers paid go to... typically $8-10K upfront money to secure the job)

Jilin native Chang Ye, 28, has been one of Mr Shanmugam's workers for nearly two years. He was told he would work in the service line but did not expect to be a cleaner.

He said the different cultures can make work tough. 'I speak very little English so it's hard to communicate with my colleagues. I'm not used to the food too,' he said.

Among those who have managed to overcome the cultural barrier is Fujian native Lin Jun Xiong. The 21-year-old started out doing cleaning in Ananda Bhavan, in Selegie Road, two years ago. Since then, he has picked up some Tamil, and today mans the cash register and can even make a mean roti prata as well as thosai for customers.

He learnt it from watching his colleagues at work.

'It's quite similar to the jian bing (Chinese pancake) we have in China.'

He also got a Singaporean colleague to teach him how to read the menu and he is already an attraction of sorts.

Customers would buy snacks from him because they are amused by a Chinese who can speak Tamil.

Ms Shahida Dana, 35, is one satisfied customer. 'He makes thosai even better than the Indians,' she insisted.

Again 154th trying to distort reality playing the tired, overused "Sinkies-don't-want-to-work-as-XYZ-so-PAP-import-Ftrash" card! Lie a few thousand more times and it might just become a fact!

Just admit it, these business scums want CHEAP LABOUR to reduce operating cost and hence even more profits for the bosses. By hiring Ftrash, they can get away with paying super low wages and they don't even need to pay employer's CPF contribution!

A Ftrash can live on $1000/month staying in a dorm for $200-300 a month, eat rice with curry and still remit $400 back home every month! Can $1000/month sustain a Singaporean family with $250k HDB pigeon cage loan installment, CPF, SC&C, PUB bills, kids' expenses to pay?

Pay salaries that can sustain a Singaporean family then see if there are Singaporeans willing to work lah!

bro, there is a big scam going on in the foreign workers market. MOM knows about it just that they can't do anything about it.

Let me tell u the secret. For that PRC who got the 2-year contract job in Little India, he probably borrowed $10K to secure that job. This $10K is paid to agent which is split between agent and employer side. Nowadays, employer is demanding more which my guess is 6-4 split. In other words, employer is getting a $6K rebate cash upfront even before the PRC starts work.

In any case, if you divide this amount by 24 months, effectively, employer is only paying $750 per month for a worker to work 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. You tell me, which Singaporean can work like that?

This is nothing more than a modern day slavery!

Have seen those PRC employed by Indian coffeeshops in the neighbourhoods. Usually, there's only 1 PRC out of many Indians and they get bullied.

Maybe not. He may adopt the same habits of digging his kar-chng to add some shit mistakenly thinking that it adds extra flavour.

Impressive after 2yrs speaking Tamil, how many local Chinese can do that. PRC FTs are better than local Chinese and HIndian FTs.

PRCs dont have the social and cultural  baggage of these ethnocentric Hindian FTs, who look down upon local dark skinned Tamils, Muslim Malays and Chinese whom  they consider to be low caste or non Aryans.

PRCs dont have such problesm and they seem to integrate well with local Tamils/Malays, and are not as racist as local Chinese. PRCs are good for Sinkie poor not Hindian FTS and local Sinkies like Spearmints et al, should be replaced by ppl like Lin Jun Xiongs :))

Everything u go to coffeeshop or restaurant to makan, just make small chat with the FTs lah... the PRCs are more forthright. So far, most I ask will tell me that they pay something like S$7-10K to agent to guarantee to get the job.

Ask yourself, how can agent "guarantee" anything? vice-versa, if u have PRC friend, ask him or her to cold call any shopowners or places, ask them if they need workers... u'd be surprised, some will say they only get workers thru agent....

Whole farking thing is corrupted lah... MOM/ICA/CPIB... all know about it just that it's difficult to check or prove. Some more the agents are overseas. Any illegal transactions are carried out thru overseas accounts...

Only few stupid ones will transact here...

Hey bro, as far as I know, Spearmint got no problem with local Indian bros.... in any case, most Sinkie chinese when they know the indian they talk to is a local bro, they still switch their tone and thinking....

For me is like that, if I know the Indian person I talked to is a local (most of time, can tell thru accent lah), I treat him like any other Singaporeans...

They bring in salmonella and other diseases because they eat everything under the sun and they undercook everything. Eat the mee pok and you'll see how long they 'cook' the fish and the pork.

Gooks are the biggest carriers of Hep B. That ought to tell you something.

Don't forget the other scam where the employer find excuses to sack the Ftrash then send him back after 2 months... and keep the 60%!
