I probably have a singular interest in a Sci Fi TV series called Eureka for which a pilot is supposed to air this summer, because I live near the city where the series is supposedly situated.  As best I can figure, Eureka is supposed to occur in the present day, so those of us who actually live there can tell you what it's really like in Eureka, and because of my singular interest, I've done so.

I haven't heard anything about it. Do you know when it starts?

When I was browsing last night I found a forum for it by SpockSeven. It seemed as if it had already started in her area.

Nasa is testing their new plantary drill in Eureka. If they like how it works it will be used in the moon.

Eureka is getting famous.

(bafflement)

Ah, I see now: http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2006/may/HQ_05213_drill.html

The research team is spending the next two weeks testing the drill at the Eureka Weather Station on Ellesmere Island in Canada's Nunavut province, about 690 miles from the North Pole. The outpost is on a vast, ice-covered landscape, buffeted by frigid winds and sub-zero temperatures. The conditions are in some ways similar to those found on the moon and Mars. The team will gather dozens of core samples that Canadian geologists will use to learn more about the geology and biology of the icy island.

That's another Eureka, entirely.

The NWS weather station in Eureka is located on Woodley Island in Humboldt Bay.

Is someone in the news media confusing the two?

I get such shivers just thinking about Eureka, Nunavet, that I want absolutely Nunavet.  (Submits to beatings with wet noodles for terrible pun.)

Confusion seems inevitable in this instance.  If I had heard a partial news report, I suspect that I would have confused it with a publicity stunt for the TV show.

I Googled "eureka weather station", a Google I have done before, and unlike before, 9 out of 10 of the results are about the Nunavet Eureka, Weather Underground carrying pages about both of them.

Heywaitaminnit!  Weather Underground is every bit as confused as you were: http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/71917.html

The page title says:

Eureka, Nunavut

Seven lines down, the page says:
Observed At: Eureka, CA

However, the temperatures shown are definitely not from Eureka, CA.

At least it was good for something. I can't wait, June is almost here! I need a new sci fi type show, no repeats.
