For example, you could run the Macintosh operating system on a Windows PC using an emulator or run Windows on a x86 Linux distribution using a virtual machine. In general, both emulators and virtual machines can be classified together as platform emulators.
Discussions, questions and advice about general OS and hardware use are also invited. Please feel free to ask for help with any emulator, virtual machine or operating system you are attempting to setup ... just butt in at anytime.
Want to run Mac OS X on your PC? If you own Puma, Jaguar, Panther, or Tiger CDs (for PowerPC), PearPC will allow you to run your Mac OS X software on Windows or Linux. See the lists below for emulator download links.
The first PPC Macintosh emulator called SheepShaver is also available. All you need is a Mac OS 8.5 to OS 9.0.4 CD in order to run the most recent PPC Classic software on Windows, Linux or Mac OS X guest platforms. Ask us how.
The open-source Basilisk II JIT is the crowning gem of 68k-based Mac emulators. It lets you run up to Mac OS 8.1 fast on multiple guest platforms. Many of us buy used 68k Macs and software from places like eBay in order to enjoy using Basilisk II "legally". I created a Windows compiled HTML help file to answer many of your questions about Basilisk II: download it here.
Don't own a Mac? Check out the Executor one year trial (soon to become free) which gives you a small taste of what the other Mac emulators are capable of doing, without requiring the ownership of a Mac. Executor can run many old Macintosh programs and games.
My ancient website "The Macintosh Emulation Station" has some tips on setting up and using Mac emulators. There are also links to download dozens of 68k Macintosh freeware/shareware programs that have been tested using the Basilisk II Macintosh emulator.

In addition to the Delphi Forums Terms of Service (TOS), the staff requests that the following rules be followed to make this forum as easy to use, friendly and helpful as possible:
Please be polite. (No flaming/trolling)
Keep the language reasonably clean.
Do not submit requests for ROM image files or any form of retail software. This includes Macintosh OS 7.6.x and 8.x.
Threads may occasionally enter the realm of politics and religion. This is a Tech forum, so posts or entire threads that enter those realms may suddenly disappear at admin discretion. There are plenty of those types of forums already on Delphi for you to participate on (like I do).
MacOSx86 may be a violation of the DMCA and other copyright laws. No discussions of how to setup or obtain MacOSx86 will be allowed on this forum in order to observe Delphi TOS.
Please try and help us keep the threads on topic. Use the Completely Off Topic folder for anything non-forum specific you have in mind.
Please check the existing messages, especially recent ones, to see if your problem or question may be answered or discussed. You may find the answer you need. Use the Find option to look for keywords related to your problem. Add any question you may have in a related thread if possible.
Flaming, misinformation, and/or forum rules or TOS violations will not be acceptable. Posts that interfere with this forum's operation or staff's ability to run the forum will be removed. Second offences may require temporary or permanent gagging/banning.
This forum is the central member of The Unified Forums, which are a group of forums I administer as a DelphiPlus member. Check them out if you're interested or bored. ;-)
