Trump's Lawyers Plot Joint Defenses With Others Caught In Mueller Probe

Jan Stromme The president's personal lawyers have teamed up with attorneys for other individuals embroiled in Special Counsel Bob Mueller's probe, multiple sources tell The Daily Beast. For a while, the president's lawyers even had regular conference calls with other attorneys to discuss the Mueller investigation, according to one source familiar with the calls. The arrangement is known as a joint defense agreement, and it allows the lawyers to share information—without violating attorney-client privilege. It’s a common strategy when multiple defendants are dealing with the same prosecutor on the same matter. Joint defense agreements often annoy prosecutors since they let people being investigated share information and compare notes on what the government is doing. “It gives the defendants an advantage,” said Sol Wisenberg, a criminal defense attorney with the firm Nelson Mullins. “It allows them to know more about what’s going on in the investigation.” “Prosecutors don’t like it, but there’s not a damn thing they can do about it,” he added.

Judge orders Mueller to identify unnamed figures in Manafort indictment

Politico  https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/12/mueller-unnamed-figures-manafort-638800

A federal judge has ordered special counsel Robert Mueller to identify by Friday all the individuals and organizations involved in former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's alleged scheme to lobby on behalf of Ukraine without registering as a foreign agent under U.S. law. Among the people Mueller will be required to identify to the defense are top European former politicians who took part in the influence campaign, as well as others whose testimony Manafort has been accused of trying to influence in recent months. Manafort's alleged effort to shape the accounts of those people led to two new felony obstruction of justice charges last week. The ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson Tuesday represents a rare courtroom win for Manafort's defense, which is battling Mueller's prosecutors in two different federal courts and faces two looming jury trials.Prosecutors resisted the defense motion, but the judge's decision is not likely to be significant since many of the names are well known to the defense and have been reported in the media. For instance, former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and former Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer have acknowledged some involvement in paid lobbying work for Ukraine.

Longtime Trump fixer Michael Cohen has been telling friends he expects to be arrested shortly

Daily News  http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/ny-news-trump-michael-cohen-arrested-any-day-20180612-story.html

Michael Cohen thinks he might soon have to swap his pinstripes for jail stripes. The longtime attorney and personal fixer to President Trump expects to be put in cuffs any day now, possibly opening up his top client to legal complications, a person familiar with the matter said Tuesday.Cohen has been telling friends he fears he will soon be indicted and arrested over the federal investigation he’s facing in New York, the source told the Daily News. Investigators are probing Cohen for bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations, potential offenses that resulted in FBI raids at his Manhattan home, hotel room and office in April.“None of it is good,” the source said. “Michael is very stressed out...” A former White House official said Trump is likely concerned about the prospect of Cohen in cuffs.“Trump should be super worried about Michael Cohen,” the ex-official told Vanity Fair, which first reported Cohen’s fears of a potential arrest. “If anyone can blow up Trump, it’s him.”Cohen has worked for Trump in various capacities since 2011. His aggressive legal tactics and tough-talking demeanor has earned him the nickname Trump’s “bulldog.”

Rosenstein plans to call on House to investigate its own staff

CNN  https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/12/politics/rod-rosenstein-house-investigation/index.html

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's ongoing battle with House Republicans reached new heights Tuesday, as the No. 2 senior leader of the Justice Department plans to call on the House to investigate its own committee staff. Rosenstein has butted heads with House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes for months over a subpoena for documents related to the Russia investigation, but the battle spilled out into public view Tuesday after Fox News reported staff on the committee felt "personally attacked" at a meeting with Rosenstein in January. Justice Department officials dispute the recounting of the closed-door meeting detailed in the story, and Rosenstein plans to "request that the House general counsel conduct an internal investigation of these Congressional staffers' conduct" when he returns from a foreign trip this week, DOJ said. "The Deputy Attorney General never threatened anyone in the room with a criminal investigation," a Justice Department official said. "The FBI Director, the senior career ethics adviser for the Department, and the Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs who were all present at this meeting are all quite clear that the characterization of events laid out here is false. "The Deputy Attorney General was making the point -- after being threatened with contempt -- that as an American citizen charged with the offense of contempt of Congress, he would have the right to defend himself, including requesting production of relevant emails and text messages and calling them as witnesses to demonstrate that their allegations are false," the official said. "That is why he put them on notice to retain relevant emails and text messages, and he hopes they did so." Another former US official, also present at the meeting, agreed that at no time did Rosenstein threaten any House staff with a criminal investigation.

Cohen handled a lot of Trumps dirty business- who knows what they found! If he also handled Trump's financial shenanigans it would be even more damning. Paying off women doesn't seem to impress republican admirers!

Cohen is a big risk to Trump as even a pardon doesn't keep him out of jail.  He likely faces state prosecution at some point for state law violations in New York and Illinois.  He is the type who may say he is loyal, but put him in a cell and I bet he flips to try and get out.

President Donald Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen, has split with the legal team that has shepherded him through a criminal investigation that included a high-profile FBI raid, a source familiar with the change said Wednesday. The split could signal a shift in legal strategy and comes amid mounting pressure on Cohen as criminal charges could become likely. The source said Cohen had not yet met with prosecutors to speak about a potential deal, and it's unclear whether either side is seeking one. Cohen has not been charged with a crime, but the FBI raid of his home, hotel room and office in early April revealed that prosecutors had zeroed in on his personal financial dealings, including the payment he made to porn star Stormy Daniels on Trump's behalf before the election. Cohen has found a new lawyer, but the name of Cohen's new lawyer was not yet known.
