Playboy in Paradise: St. Vincent Salutes Playboy's 50th with Six Commemorative Postage Stamps

NEW YORK — The Caribbean will only get hotter when a series of international postage stamps depicting 50 years of Playboy's most memorable covers is issued by the island nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. From the unforgettable 1953 cover of Marilyn Monroe to the striking January 2004 Gold Anniversary cover, the best of five decades of Playboy will be represented on six individual $1.50 legal tender stamps.

Playboy, the first magazine ever to be honored on a stamp, joins the company of other international icons who have been immortalized on St. Vincent stamps including Elvis Presley, Princess Diana and John Lennon.

The stamps will be issued by the government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines on December 1, 2003, and will be available for purchase through PlayboyStore.com as well as at any St. Vincent and the Grenadines Post Office.

Playboy Enterprises is a brand-driven, international multimedia entertainment company that publishes editions of Playboy magazine around the world; operates Playboy and Spice television networks and distributes programming via home video and DVD globally; licenses the Playboy and Spice trademarks internationally for a range of consumer products and services; and operates Playboy.com, a leading men's lifestyle and entertainment Web site.

The New York-based Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corporation (IGPC), the world's largest postal agency, served as agent for the government of St. Vincent. Since 1957, IGPC has produced annual postage programs for more than 85 nations worldwide.

I want you to know I really resisted temptation on a headline for this story, and I hope all of you will also keep in mind that we want this to be a G- or no more than PG-rated forum!

Lloyd,

Where are the other 3 stamps?  Were they "R" or "X" rated?

>The article indicated that one of the stamps would be of the cover of the January 2004 issue, which has yet to come out. That leaves two stamps, whose images may bit a bit racier than the three shown.

My guess is no. I'll bet it will be some sort of stylized Rabbit Head(tm). At any rate, the Jan. 2004 issue should be out in about a week.

Playboy press rep Theresa Hennessey tells The Virtual Stamp Club the other three designs are being kept under wraps until the release of the stamps on December 1st. The January 2004 issue hits the newsstands on November 28th, a Friday. At least one of the images does reflect the cover of that issue.

We'll post the rest of the issues as soon as they are available.

No doubt, they are of some members of the Royal family.

The island is lovely. Oh well, alas St. Vincent I knew it well.

>It's too bad they didn't think of holding an announcement-related ceremony at a major stamp show (we are, after all, dealing with more or less bonifide postage stamps). If you would like, you can either contact the issuers and let them know that CHICAGOPEX would be more than willing to give them some space this weekend for an announcement (after all, St. Vincent & the Grenadines is in the Caribbean, and CHICAGOPEX is hosting the annual convention of the British Caribbean Philatelic Society), or you can always give a call to the office of my Democratic State Central Committeeman, William Marovitz (husband of Playboy publisher Christie Hefner), at 312/595-1400, and ask him about it.

You're just bucking to get a few playmates for Chicagopex, aren't you.  :o)

Wouldn't you have better luck getting a playmate on such short notice by calling Mayor Daley's office?
