I asked once if I could download books from Barnes & Noble onto my kindle.  I was told they were incompatible.  But yet, I can convert pdf to mobi which is what the kindle accepts.

I use to think I would be too, but after a couple weeks away I found I didn't miss it all that much...and I had more time for reading! ;-)

I had forgotten but when I first got my tablet the instructor at the library put an app on it called Overdrive. It lets people download books to read. When time is up they just go away. Overdrive is a national network of libraries that lends ebooks with a library card, for free.
Check out your library.

I have to be in constant touch with the publishers and author that I read and review for.  I have to be able to post my reviews in a variety of places. So, along with other things that I use my computer for, I can easily go without print books.  I still can read with my kindle or on my desktop.

Two stage transfers are there, too complex for many readers (or too much of a hassle).  There is almost always a way around a compatibility issue if you work at it.
