Kind of talking in general about the trend of us drafting big backs late only for them to be far outshined by the udfas. Cedric Summers is just me reliving the last great Steeler powerback Cedric Humes, who was hyped by many as Summers was here. When will the Steelers learn that we can't draft powerbacks, or RBs in general... just like we can't draft rs (no matter how my times we inflate a rs to the 3rd rd pick he will not be better because we drafted him or how early we draft him). Look out when we bring in udfas though as it seems like we've got a few lower level scouts in need of a promotion.
Basically the question is how will our roster breakdown be with the skill positions?
Will we carry an extra skill player (rs) in lieu of that extra OL depth that we don't have anyways?
We could go into this year with Starks/Colon/Foster as our tackles and Kemo/Essex/Urbik at guard and Hartwig/Legursky at center. That's only 8 OL worthy of making an NFL team, with a very loose usage of the term "worthy" as Urbik only fits this bill from draft position/young developing perspective. Capizzi, Hills, Parquet and Shipley are ps at best in quality and a couple of them should make it there, but if we go into the season with only 8 OL and 7 active come gameday (Urbik inactive) that could open up a roster spot which we could choose to use on A)Redzoneman-the powerback B)Logan-the rs or C)Hills-the underwhelming tackle who could be protected as "depth" by keeping him on the roster as an inactive every week.
The whole above scenario is predicated by my belief that the jack of all trades but master of none Carey Davis will make the team on versatility alone, even though he has shown nothing in camp or preseason games to make me believe that he earned that spot over Redman or Logan who both have something to bring to the table other than being average a lot.
I guess it's a good problem to have about 55-56 players that you'd like to see make the team, the only problem is those 2-3 that get away that come back to haunt you and you're left holding a sack of Tony Hills
