They may have started it to troll the technologically challenged and the gullible, but they unfortunately provided a condensation nuclei for a large number of those that otherwise would not have found a common fixation for their delusions and amplified what should have just been a bunch of isolated diagnoses of paranoid schizophrenia into a huge movement.
Sort of like the flat earthers who now are actually a thing, along with the moon landing deniers.
