I doubt that either of us knows the population genetics of the Luo of Kenya, nor if the Moors interbred with them.

I know I don't, it was pure speculation.

What I did suggest is that at a time when Kenya didn't have much means of transport it was on the edge of a very active society and the possibility of genetic dispersal was there.

I've just found something shiny to distract my attention from this line of discourse ; so if you'll excuse me.

I'm confused now.

Your statement that
I doubt that either of us knows the population genetics of the Luo of Kenya, nor if the Moors interbred with them
seems to contradict your earlier statement of

but nothing is "lurking" in a Luo but Kenyan genes

It seemed to me that you started off saying that the (for lack of a better phrase) genetic inheritance of a Luo from Kenya would be exclusively... "Luo from Kenya," with nothing else mixed in. No other genes lurking.  (post 46 & 49)  But now it seems like you're leaning more towards the "anything could be lurking" end of things.

(Such silly words for such a scientific subject... ah well.)

Yes, and Bill Cosby talked about that about 20 years ago, that a child who is part black is black as far as the white population is concerned.

But is Coqui talking about the "one-drop rule*" --or the fact that no one (black, white, green, purple) can identify the race of another person's parents, simply by eyeballing said person?

***

If none of us knew Obama's mother was white, we couldn't tell by looking.  He looks like 95% of Black men in any large urban center

***

I thought Coqui and Pie were BOTH talking about the eyeballing thing; can't figure out there the "one-drop rule*" would fit into either post..

Which perhaps goes to show that this thread is beyond my ability to process.

*How To Piss Off a Racist: Give him a blood transfusion, tell him that the blood was from a black/Asian/hispanic/whatever person, and now - because of the "one drop rule" - he is that so all the things he's said through the years about whatever group(s) now apply to him.  He is no longer welcome in his neighborhood, he runs a small business so he will definitely not be hiring himself (or if he does allow himself to work for himself, he'll pay himself less than what he pays other employees), and if his children start hanging out with him, he'll cut them off and never speak to them again.

I remember an episode of MASH -- season 2, "Dear Dad...Three" (K-409) --
that did this -- a soldier came in for surgery and requested that the docs "don't give (him) the wrong color blood" -- so while he's in recovery Hawkeye and Trapper came in and painted him with iodine, just to piss him off. Then they taught him a lesson by telling him that Dr. Charles Drew, an African-American, was an innovator* in blood banking and transfusion technology, which saved many lives in WWII.

* fr. wiki on blood transfusion: "In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Dr. Charles R. Drew's research led to the discovery that blood could be separated into blood plasma and red blood cells, and that the plasma could be frozen separately. Blood stored in this way lasted longer and was less likely to become contaminated."

I have decided that wild violets are the GOP of the flower bed. They lull you with their old-fashioned beauty into thinking that you might share a value system. They make you believe that they want peace in the garden. Then one morning you wake up and the little f***ers have taken over, shouldering out anything exotic, sweetly choking the bejeezus out of anything of that disagrees with them.  Beware the violet.  -- my friend Julie R.
