Having read the obituary article from WaPo, the Austere Religious Scholar appellation was a passing reference to Baghdadi's background BEFORE his radicalization during the fall of Saddam Hussein period in Iraq. The article went on to say that Baghdadi became, through the trials and tribulations of the Iraqi wars and the aftermath of the dissolution of effective governance in the region, a firebrand of Conservative Thought in strict Islam.

The DNA ID was facilitated by having a decent DNA sample of recent days on hand to do the instant rapid marker ID. Had recent DNA samples not been available, the ID would have taken much longer if at all barring collection of a close relative's DNA for comparison.

The uproar over Austere Religious Scholar was because they actually used it as a headline before realizing that wasn't the thing to do and changed it. I suspect it was in the WaPo Morg where they keep details of known people ready to use in cases like this. Someone wasn't paying attention.
