My zoo disturbs me. It is very modern and charges a big fee. Was free when I was in school.
I went thru San Diego Zoo by overhead gondola. Many animals were out in the open. Mine are in hard pavement. Elephants have found it very painful. (So would humans if they weighed that much.)

I loved the San Diego zoo.  We have one here called World Wildlife and it's very natural.  My DH and I watch the cable show "The Zoo" on the weekends - it's amazing.  Bronx Zoo and anther one.  They train the animals so the can do heart exams, foot exams safely.  The elephants they use a brush while they check their heart rate and feet.   apparently they love to be brushed vigorously!

At least one elephant here was put to sleep due to foot infections from only standing on concrete. Old zoo had dirt for them to stand on.

I loved the gondola running overhead. a great way to see animals behaving like animals.

That is "progress".

Lot of the bigger zoos are reversing the trend and removing concrete except in the interior where the animals are kept for the vet, or so they can clean the public viewing area.

That is great. Too bad the taxpayers will foot the bill.

A lot of zoos are self funded from admission fees and donations from various wildlife foundations and animal research companies.
