When you can't tell, try cutting your finger with one side... if it doesn't work... try the other side! (* ROFLMAO *)

I sharpen all the knives in our home (both single-side blade and double-side blade), and you can easily tell by cutting a piece of paper with it. One side will cut the paper, the other side won't!

Actually, I myself, flick my thumb over the edge of the sharp side to determine whether I need to sharpen it more or not, but that's only recommended for the pros.

I can tell but occasionally knives are made that have similar shapes on both sides.

I've never seen knives like that other than a foldable stiletto which actually has blades on both sides.
