There are so many conspiracies!  That vaccination number is unusually low.

Exactly. And those who were unemployed during the lockdowns, have had a chance to re-evaluate, "where do I want to be 10 years from now?" and decided to get off of the hamster wheel. Many of them left the industry, never to return, because they had their tolerance of Karens and Kevins, did their tour of duty in Hell, and spent the past year looking hard for anything better.

And the industry will have a huge problem recruiting employees because finally the most abused people have been given options for maybe the first time in their lives.

Yes, that phenomenon has been reported in numerous countries around the world. The extra steps many are talking to prevent spread of COVID have also prevented the spread of many other influenza and other viruses that used to peak at certain times of the year. Likewise, in mid 2020, hospitals had just started to get over the 100% capacity mark as COVID numbers started to drop, but then there were many other people who wanted to get diagnosed for other diseases, but were afraid to go to hospitals because they feared that they might get COVID in those hospitals, so then you have the undetected percentages as well. Now these undetected numbers may also have helped reduce the actual number of other influenza types as well.

The trick is right click, save link as, and you can view the whole thing even though it tries to hide all but the first paragraph behind a paywall. Worst case I have the HTML on the local HD that views fine with Firefox.

Yes, and with Firefox, you can save just the single page viewed or you can save the full page with all the linked images as well... that will include saving all the javacripts and other encoded pages not to mention the 1 pixel tracking images as well.

Also, if you use Firefox, you can hit ^U [CTRL + U] and view the raw HTML page too showing all the hidden coding. And if you use Thunderbird, when you're looking at an E-mail, if you hit ^U [CTRL + U], it will show you the full E-mail headers to see who the original source is and all the intermediary sites that E-mail traversed to get to you inbox as well. Those are just tricks of the trade.

And if you use a networking tool called Wireshark, you can capture all packets of not just that one page, but all other communications which are going on in the background while you're viewing that page as well. Some related to the page you're viewing while others are entirely non-related to the page you're viewing. (i.e. your Antivirus goes out to search for the latest updates, your firewall software looks for the latest sites which should be blocked, etc.) And thus you don't have to right-click and save the page as the entire conversation is captured in the Wireshark file.

When I started teleworking from home last year, I received an unbelievable amount of requests to help troubleshoot people's home networks as they kept getting cut off from the corporate VPN. Problem was all caused by corporate... pre-pandemic, there were only about 120 ~ 150 people who had VPN connectivity and so they purchased 200 licenses. But post pandemic, when everybody was sent home, they had over 600 people trying to use those 200 licenses. Before they could get the number of licenses increased, they needed to do something to allow more people to access so they set a timer on the VPN session to cut off after 1 hour... that would allow somebody else to login. But it also cut that one previously connected person off and now he was stuck in the waiting queue! (* CHUCKLE *) After about a week and a half of getting budget approval for the additional 400 licenses, they still had the one hour cut off set and that was causing unintended problems as well, so they removed the one hour cutoff and finally people stopped complaining about not being about not being able to connect to VPN to do their work.

Ahhhh... but the hassles you have to put up with unprepared companies! (* CHUCKLE *)

As for the applications for new jobs with better pay... yes... if you have the skills, you get all kinds of offers.

I've always had headhunters calling me asking if I wanted to quit my job and move elsewhere. I moved 7 times over the past 35 years, but they were all for higher pay and better positions. And that was all pre-pandemic. So as for these post pandemic people, perhaps the pandemic has made them think about looking for better jobs.

If you have the necessary skills, there is usually an employer interested in hiring you. But if you don't make it known and they don't know about it... then you're stuck in the middle in the mud! (* CHUCKLE *)

So yes, places like LinkedIn and others are a good way to make yourself known to others.

I retired this past March and thus don't really plan on working anywhere else unless it's some really "One of those offers you just cannot pass up" deals.

Who could have ever imagined that the hardest part of this pandemic was convincing people to save their own lives?  We should be calling it a "stupidemic"

Servers kept those jobs because they could make enormous profits in tips. But now tipping is under attack, and Covid cut that income source, so there isn’t any upside. 

It’s not that simple.  People had to work if they still had jobs and were allowed to go.  They have family members who could not be alone.  Those of us who spend time online are probably more self sufficient as a whole, but I have friends who are not on social media or forums ar all, and who were literally going out of their minds from isolation and from not seeing faces.  During the entire pandemic they took road trips, they met some people without masks and for the most part, did not get Covid.  I met a group outdoors and maybe half were not wearing masks.  I solved that by bringing a chair and keeping myself distanced more than 6’.  No one who was there got Covid.

I understand that some essential people had to work but those essential workers took precautions.  I am referring to those folks that could have easily taken precautions and chose not to because they either think this is a matter of "personal freedoms" or they were conned into thinking that the virus was a hoax.  Those are the people who were likely responsible for the spikes in infection. Some were lucky and escaped infection but many weren't so lucky (I have a friend who lost both of her parents within a few days due to COVID).  None of us WANTED to wear masks. None of us WANTED to stay isolated in our homes.  This is a public health crisis that requires everyone's cooperation to get through, so when I hear someone saying "we should be able to remove the masks because we're tired of wearing them", that tells me the person has no clue of the science behind the virus, nor do they care about the welfare of themselves or anyone around them.

Except paper and cloth masks don’t really do much to prevent the spread.  They also knew that.  The best are N95 and we know how that went.

I was out today and very few people are still wearing them, even indoors.  The employees must but patrons don’t have to.  It’s feels very strange.

Initially the public was asked to wear cloth and paper masks so that there were enough of the N95 masks for healthcare workers.  Cloth and paper masks are not the best protection but they do help in stopping droplets that can infect others.
