Haven’t posted here in a while but I should point out that this is mint julep season, with mint growing like a weed (which it is).  Mmmmmmm.  Tough to decide between a nice bourbon or a nice rye.  Decisions, decisions.  ;-)

Mint is definitely a weed!  A neighbor has it growing in a parking strip.  But that's a half block away. Too far to walk for the wife. The wife transplanted some to the front and back yards.  Now we have our own weeds.

My go to cheap whisky.  Plenty good to sip on its own, but perfect for mixed drinks.  Been on a whisky sour and Kentucky mule kick lately.  With mint and ginger-flavored club soda added to make it lighter and more refreshing.

And no, it's not bourbon.  Just like not all sparkling wines are not Champagne.

Anyone try Western Son Single Barrel? My son-in-law brought a bottle over last weekend. They are out of Texas, and from what I've seen are predominantly a vodka maker. It was surprisingly good, some sweetness and a lot of flavor up front, with dark chocolate and cherry on the finish. It was very smooth, and had virtually no burn. It was from batch 3, I will keep my eyes open for a subsequent batch and see how consistent they are.

It’s got the bouquet of an Abo’s armpit!

All I’ll say about this is I first tried Dickel during a post-College road trip to Nashville for an old college buddy’s wedding in a camper with a bunch of college friends.  Would than smart phones existed then.  I didn’t like brown liquors back then (c.1985 ish) but I did like George.

About 10 years ago, we did a blind taste test of American whiskeys at a local conference. I don’t remember all the ones we tasted, but it included Knob Creek and some high-falutin’ boutique bourbon plus Dickel 12. The 8 won the blind test.

Anyway, here’s  an official review that I can hold with.

Too bad Costco can't sell hard liquor here.  These are the same.

Well, I picked this up instead. Delicious!  Eleven years old.

Cool!

I know that you like the higher test stuff over ice.  What’s the proof?
