You can use cotton batting! Keep an eye on it but I bake things on it (inside of a pan) all the time, and it's always just fine. If you don't have that, I think maybe cotton balls would survive, or even wadded up fabric. Since not even paper will burn if it's in a pan or dish at 275 degrees, I'm sure cotton fabric won't, either.

Thank you!  Hopefully the stuff will not burn as the area needed to be separated is higher up on the sculpture.

No, it won't burn. It needs a much higher temperature or direct flame, even then it would just melt. :) Good luck!
