Hi Leigh, If I were going to a retreat I'd sure love to hear your thoughts and see your demoes on the subjects!!!!I'm so sorry that you had a bad experience in the past with demos. Maybe there were extenuating circumstances, like scheduling snafus, that actually had nothing to do with you. Hope it works out in a very positive way for all concerned.

BIG HUGS,

I know I would be interested in that demo...and the reducing without waste demo too. I suspect Anita is right about the scheduling thing. Might your location have been less than ideal? Was it clearly marked so people could see what was being demoed? I once went to a fiber festival (I am a spinner too) and nearly missed a demo I was dying to see because it wasn't real obvious that that was the place!

At any rate, you have amazing talent and knowledge to share. Since you can't really know if your demo (or anyone else's) will be well attended you will probably have to decide if it is worth it to you. If you will be devastated should you have a repeat, well...it probably wouldn't be worth it to me in that case. Life is just too short to risk feeling that bad, IMO. But if you feel ok with just rolling with whatever happens...then do it! Nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that!

Hi anita,  Im a huge believer after about 5 years that it was a strange set of hapenstance that cused and my inability to tell someone  in a loud voice "Im doin a demo" every one come NOW.  Not me!!!  Also Im was almost always on medicayion that really mess me up. fortunately I don' have as much trouble with that plus I have a long time for preparation.  I have stuff written down alrealy <GGG>.

I even wrote the outline it already.  I think I'll be writing it out and if they think it might be good I can put it in Donna Kato's school or add some stuff and see ifn any one will buy it on my Etsy Page we'll see what happens..

I know absolutely nothing about air brushing so...I won't ask that :) But wonder if you think there is any hope of resurrecting a cane that is very hard...like it was new but got put into storage for 10 years and when I found it I'd swear it had been baked...but it wasn't. I had many canes with it that are usable still so I have no idea why that one got like it did. I will live a rich and full life if it's just unsalvageable...more curious what you think!

Oh yeah...and I think maybe you need to find a volunteer to wave a large flag stating "Demo Starting Now...Follow me!!!" They can walk around the general area and draw the crowd for you :)

Leigh, I think it sounds very exciting and an important subject that I've never really seen addressed in any depth. An "in person" demo (especially if participants brought their actual "elderly" canes) would be an added bonus.

On that hard as a rock cane first thing you need to do is put some Diluent on it. Or baby oil and wrap it up with saranwrap, real tight and put it in a warm spot.  By the way what is the size of it. if its very big after a few days of wrapping it up in diluent open it up and wipe it off so it isnt too slippery, then put something down on the floor or very solid place and start slamming it down on the table or floor like you want to beat the crap out of it turning it each time. hold one end of it and thwapp it down hard do it for a while if it should start to reduce push it back  into its original size. it should start to get a little softer. if it doesnt seem like its doing anything, wipe it off and put more diluent on it and wrap it back in saranwrap, and make sure its like airtight and put it back in a warm dark place and wait a couple days.  If you keep doing that it should start to reduce or at least soften up. Dont let it move too much think of doing it slow so you dont get distortion in the cane. You can keep doing this until the cane feels more likely to reduce then continue to do what you want with it.  The most important thing is slamming it down the vibrations of the slamming goes right through the cane and helps it get some movement back in the clay!!  Let me know if you try it and how it works. Dont throw it out well just try something else{GG}.
