How to Post a Message:

There are two ways to post messages: Replying to a message in an existing discussion or starting a new discussion.

Replying to a Message

You can reply to a message someone else has posted by clicking the reply button on  the post you are reading. It contains a white left facing arrow and the word  Reply  located at the bottom right of the post.   You can also reply using all or selected text from the post.  To do this:

  • Before clicking on the reply button highlight the specific text from the post you want to respond to. This text will be carried onto the beginning of your reply post.
  • Type your message
  • Preview or Post your message using the buttons below.

Addressing Your Reply:

Your message will automatically be addressed to the person who wrote the post you're replying to.  If you want your message to go to someone else instead, or to ALL members in the thread,  click in the field next to the "TO"  at the top left of your edit screen.  You can choose ALL or a member from the drop down list  by typing in the member's ID. Their name should pop up on the list.

Starting a New Discussion:

You can start a new thread by:

  • Clicking on the "New Topic" button that appears at the top of the main forum page to the right across from DISCUSSIONS.  
  • Type in the name of your new topic subject.   
  • Leave the TO   showing  ALL
  • Select a folder where you want your post to appear.
  • Click on the down arrow across from Folders.  
  • Scroll down and click on the folder where your post will appear.  
  • Type your message.
  • Click on Post

How to Send a SOS Request for HELP!

If you at anytime need cessation support you can start a new discussion in either the  "Introductions/Newcomers Nook" or  "Quit Support"  folders.  See instructions above for Starting a Discussion.

Note: You can find the new topic area from any place on the forum by scrolling all the way to the top of the page.

How to Bookmark a Thread

To to bookmark a message:

  • Go to the bottom of the post you want to bookmark.
  • At the bottom right find the "Reply" button.
  • Hover your cursor to the left of the "Reply"  button
  • Find the "Bookmark this message" symbol  just to the left of the "Reply" button.
  • Click on the bookmark this message button.
  • You will receive a pop-up message that will say

To find your bookmarked messages

  • Look to the left at the DISCUSSIONS section.
  • Click on the drop down menu in grayed area immediately beneath the word DISCUSSIONS. 
  •  You will see a menu that contains items like, "7 Days back", "2 Days back", "Unread Msgs", "Unread to Me" etc.  Look all the way to the bottom, the last item has the book mark symbol  and the words "Bookmarked Msgs"  your saved bookmark messages will appear here ...........just click on the one you want to view and it opens with your post. When finished reviewing, click on your browser back arrow key to go back to where you were. See example graphics below.

How to Follow a Discussion

Want to know if someone posted in your buddy group? Get email notifications on any specific discussion you wish to follow.

  1. Click on your profile pic in the upper right hand corner.
  2. From the drop-down menu select “My Preferences”
  3. Scroll down to “View Zeta as Classic”
  4. Check the box before “View all Zeta forums in Classic”
  5. Select “Update”
  6. A box will appear “Success”. Click “OK”.
  7. Return to About Smoking Cessation Forum. Note: It will look vastly different.
  8. Select the “Messages” tab to show the folders.
  9. Go to the Discussion you want to follow.
  10.  Select “Subscribe” in the upper right directly across from the Discussion name.
  11.  Select how often you want to subscribe. Then click “Subscribe”.
  12.  A Subscribe box will appear. Click “OK”.
  13.  If you have other Discussions you wish to follow, repeat Steps 9 thru 11.
  14.  Select “My Preferences” at the top of the screen.
  15.  Scroll down to “View Zeta as Classic”
  16.  Check the box so it is now empty
  17.  Select “Update”
  18.  “Success” box. Click “OK”.

Good morning, everyone

My name Is Chloe, I'm 19 years old and Im on day 6 of quitting smoking. I feel pretty weak to continue, because I feel like I'm already so messed up from vaping 50mg of nicotine for close to 4 years, not realizing how addicted and reliant my happiness ended up being around a USB stick. Whats weird is I put the vape down, and find myself craving cigarettes, or counting cigarette buds on my 40 walks a day. I still wake up crying most days, and end up trying to kill time smoking weed, wondering when will I finally stop missing it, or feeling satisfied living without it. If anyone has any advice for me, please, Im all ears.

First of all, it’s great that you decided to quit at your age. You are ahead of the game. Some of us only wish we quit as early as you. The earlier you quit, less damage you do to your organs. I know being young, health wasn’t high on the list, at least that’s what I remember. You are smart. I’m not sure you’re a reader but search this forum. There’s so much information here about what to expect and what others experience. You are not alone in your experience- so many of us have gone through it. I believe worst is over for you in terms of physical withdrawal. Now you’re fighting with yourself- your head. You have to tell yourself you can beat this. You are strong. When that urge hits move your body, come and text here. That urge passes. I’m only on 58 days so I consider myself still new to all of this but there’s so many experienced teachers here and they are all so supportive. Think of how great you will feel and how much you will save and you don’t have to live with the fear of getting lung cancer or any other smoke related diseases. Congratulations on this journey!

Thank you so much for the support. I really appreciate the message and definitely will use it to remind myself of the things I'm gaining by taking care of my health sooner. Im making it through the mental battle! Today's the first day I've been able to do things without smoking on my mind 24/7. Making progress!

Only the passage of time not smoked will bring you the peace you seek.  Your mind will try to come up with all sorts of ways to replace the nicotine you have purged out of your body.  Don't give in to those tricks.  Not a single one of them.  You do not need nicotine and you really don't want nicotine either.   

You are probably already feeling better for brief periods.  Those silent periods will expand over time to encompass all day everyday but only if you do not smoke or partake in any nicotine consumption.  The longer you refuse to allow yourself to consume nicotine, the sooner your peace of mind will come.

Hello all,

I didn't start smoking until I was 22. I never saw the point in it. I'm now 41 and it scares me to think I've been smoking for almost 20 years. I have been trying to quit on and off for the last 8 years. I've tried everything; cold turkey, patches, gum. The last two years I have been vaping as I thought this would be a stepping stone to quitting. In many ways, the vaping has been worse. As well as the cost in money and time and the unknown health effects of vaping, I've been living with an underlying sense of shame and guilt for so long now that it has become normalised for me. I'm starting my quitting journey today, so I can be a better example to my children, so I don't have to waste time and money vaping, but most importantly to restore my self-respect and peace of mind that has been missing for too long. 

Plan is to gradually reduce vape intake for next week (writing it down, so I can hold myself accountable and see progress). I will also only vape in one room of the house. That means not taking my vape out with me and learning to live without it for longer stretches. Bit scary, but here we go. Feels good to be part of a support group.

Congratulations to you and the others that have posted who are committed to quitting smoking/vaping in 2021.  For me there has always been something nice about a new year and a fresh start.  I just wanted to share a bit of perspective and advice and hope that anyone who reads it gets some strength and wisdom from it.

I had been a smoker to some extent for over 35 years.  Over that period I ranged from an occasional smoker who averaged out to 1 or 2 a day, to more consistently around 5-6 a day and for the last 5 years I smoked 10-12 most days.  While not a “heavy” smoker by some standards it’s still enough that the body and brain doesn’t like stopping.

I posted on this site on January 1, 2020 and announced that I was quitting smoking that day.  Did I really think I meant it?  Uh, NO!  Previously I tried to do it all myself without support or even trying to understand what addiction is all about.  I had a series of medical tests upcoming over the next couple months and didn’t want to go in as a smoker so that was my motivation.  Fortunately my health isn’t perfect but better than I expected.  Here we are a year later and I have been totally nicotine free this whole time.  This still shocks me but it proves if I can do it, you can too.  Occasional thoughts of smoking do pop up and I suspect always will, but certainly nothing that makes me want to run out to the store and buy a pack of cigarettes. 

First bit of advice is find your “why” on quitting.   Really think of how freedom from nicotine will feel and very important, don’t have cigarettes or vape juice in your home or anywhere you go if you are trying to quit.  I can’t tell you how many times I did that and sure enough, I always ended up eventually lighting up.  Also, post as often as you need to.  Sharing the experience with others increases your chances of succeeding.  

The single most important thing I did was to read Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Quit Smoking.  You can download a free version online by typing in the title so there is easy access.  I read this over my second and third day of my quit which we all know can be miserable days in terms of the physical withdrawal.  Reading the book really helped change my mindset and realize I wasn’t giving up something of great value but gaining freedom and the gateway to better physical and mental health.  I’m about to re-read it as it’s important to periodically re-commit to winning this battle against nicotine addiction and to realize we will always be addicts but that doesn’t mean we have to use nicotine.

Best wishes for all in the group.  Know that if you are here, you may not think so but you do have within you what it takes to free yourself from nicotine.  Seriously, it is always one day/minute/crave at a time!
