One of the ministers on my Universal Ministries group posted this. We'd been having an "interesting" discussion on abortion and capital punishment.
I thought I'd pass on his thoughts.
Perhaps the real question here is when will society and individuals
learn to handle both problems in a different manner? Before you all
get on your keyboards, realize, this is not aimed at either side, but
bot sides and society as a whole.
Pro lifers want to see death abolished in both instances, yet few of
those that picket and scream for life will personally step in and
take the unwanted child. They refuse to take into their homes the
teenage street kids and make their lives better. They whine about
the homeless, yet seldom do they go out into the streets and open
their homes to the poor, the drunks, the addicts and the throw aways
of society. They want some one or some institution to do it for
them. They do not want to be the Samaritan that saved the injured.
Yet they demand that everyone else does their bidding.
The right to choose group sees the question as individual right and
not that of the bleeding heart group. They see that when an animal
goes bad enough that it must be put down. If you accept that the
spirit is eternal then destroying the vessel does not actually kill
the individual, just emoves them from harming others. If there is no
eternal soul then we are only killing a mad animal and removing
sickness from the world. How is being caged for decades good for the
economy or society except to keep our revenge on display? They see it
better to never have made life than to toss it out with yesterday's
So perhaps the real question is when will we quit fighting and
learn? When will we learn how to cure the problem before it becomes
a problem? When will we learn to actually teach birth control so the
issue is not one of life or death, but of creating responsibly with
intent to create and not just because the momment felt so good? When
will we learn that the prisons should not be used to punish those
that cause minor transgressions, but to protect society from the
truly vicious and evil?
We have more people in prison today doing long terms for stupid laws
and we release the evil ones back onto our streets to continue their
pleasures. People whine and cry about cigarettes while letting their
kids expierment with drugs. They cry about gangs yet remove the
social services that kept kids from turning to gang activities.
Taxes will not cure the problems. Government has proven ineffective
as has the religious institutions locked in their doctrines.
You may not be able to cure the problems this string discusses, but
what are you doing to lessen them? How many in this group can find
time to answer these postings, but not time to give an hour or two to
our youth? Why is it someone else's job instead of yours to teach
the young? Why if you live in this world, should you not contribute
more than opinion?
If we are not willing to personally be responsible for the unwanted
baby or the mass killer, we should not tell others how they should
act. If we do not want the responsibility for these throw away people
on a personal level then we either accept society as it is or take
the steps needed to handle each instance individually.
I think that pretty much says what both sides think, so perhaps
instead of telling each other our opinions, we should look for real
Of course I neglected the issue of when life becomes life and when it
is still just a parasite, or did I?
I refer you back o previous statements of teaching and
responsibility. If we don't really teach people how to be
responsible, they will never become responsible. Notice I said teach
and not demand? If we do not teach children not to be lead by their
peer groups, but to be themselves, they will join gangs. If we do
not teach faith (not religions of man) and knowledge, we can not
expect society to change.
We are society, not the Government or the church. We as the
individuals make up the order in which we live and it takes doing to
chage things, not just talking. So perhaps the real argument is when
will we become better people and teachers?
Ain't life fun?
