FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CINDERELLA MAN STARRING OSCAR®-WINNERS RUSSELL CROWE AND RENÉE ZELLWEGER WITH ORIGINAL MUSIC BY ACADEMY AWARD®-NOMINEE THOMAS NEWMAN ON DECCA/UMG SOUNDTRACKS MAY 24, 2005

(April 25, 2005- New York, NY) Cinderella Man is the story of legendary boxer Jim Braddock brought to life by the Academy Award®-winning team of producer Brian Grazer, director Ron Howard, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, with Russell Crowe in the leading role – the same team responsible for the Oscar-winning drama, A Beautiful Mind. The film also stars Oscar®-winners Renée Zellweger opposite Crowe as Braddock’s wife, Mae. The soundtrack features original music by Academy Award®-nominee Thomas Newman (American Beauty) and will be released on Decca/UMG Soundtracks May 24, 2005.

With Cinderella Man, Newman seamlessly incorporates authentic popular melodies from the Great Depression era with an orchestral score that recalls the hopeless, yet optimistic mood of that time in America. For instance, two vintage tracks from the 1930’s “Shim-Me-Sha-Wobble” and “Tillie’s Downtown Now” are upbeat and ring of possibility, while “Change of Fortune” echoes the helpless feeling of a broken man who has hit rock bottom. Providing a touch of whimsy, actor Paul Giamatti is briefly featured whistling “Londonderry Air” on the album. The tune was lifted straight from the film during the quiet moments before Braddock’s championship fight. Newman’s score sets the mood perfectly, giving the listener a sense of how the story evolves through this affecting music. Note by note the music complements the film beautifully and will speak to everyone's desire to overcome the obstacles life has to offer.

Thomas Newman was born in Los Angeles and graduated with a Master’s in Music from Yale University. He is the youngest son of Alfred Newman, the legendary composer, conductor and music director. Also keeping film composing in the family are his brother David Newman (Anastasia, Heathers, The Phantom, Dr. Seuss’ The Cat In The Hat) and his cousin Randy (Toy Story, The Natural, A Bug's Life, Meet the Parents, Seabiscuit), who is one of the most popular singer-songwriters of our time.

Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) was Newman's breakthrough film score getting him noticed by Hollywood directors and producers. He later went on to score music for hit films such as Scent of a Woman (1992), Little Women (1994) and The Shawshank Redemption (1994) which earned Newman two Academy Award®-nominations in the same year; another nomination (for Unstrung Heroes) followed a year later. In 1999 American Beauty earned him much critical acclaim along with his first Grammy® Award and an Oscar® nomination. He has additionally composed the themes for acclaimed TV shows such as Boston Public and the HBO television series Six Feet Under for which he won an Emmy in the Outstanding Main Theme Music category in 2003. More recently, he earned his sixth Oscar®-nomination for his score of Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events (2004). Throughout his career, Thomas Newman has also received two Grammy® Award-nominations, five BMI Music Awards and one Golden Globe® Award-nomination for American Beauty.

Russell Crowe stars in the story based on the life of legendary athlete Jim Braddock, a once-promising light heavyweight boxer forced into retirement after a string of losses in the ring. As the nation enters the darkest years of the Great Depression, Braddock accepts a string of dead-end jobs to support his wife and their children, while never abandoning his dream of boxing again. Carrying on his shoulders the hopes and dreams of the disenfranchised, Braddock, dubbed the "Cinderella Man," faces tough challenges along the way, but he never looses hope to once again become a champion. His commitment to his loved ones inspired him as well as the American public, elevating the family man with a simple cause to legendary levels. The Universal Pictures film opens on June 3rd in theaters nationwide.
