Thought I’d post here on what I’m up to!  Saturday I cleaned up a corner of my sewing room and found some kits I didn’t remember having!  Lol!  But, I also found a couple of bags of scraps with ideas of how to use them.

one of these bags had a small center already sewn together- I’m sure from a class about 10 years ago! And enough pieces to make more blocks.  So I sat and sewed the blocks and added two rounds to the center.
It makes a small size drag around!  This morning I found a wild backing for it.and am trying to decide if I should try quilting it.  The Hexies are just raw edge stitched on, so I am thinking maybe just some meandering between Hexie shapes?

this is what I am up too!

I cleaned up my sewing area and was trying to decide what to work on.

I had bought some of the Waverly fabric  in grey that Quilt Mama recomended from Walmart for the hexi cubes so I have been whipstitching the cubes together. Once that is done and they are all attached together I will applique them to the grey background. This will be a really mindless handwork project and should not take that long as they are all just long straight edges. I may quilt this one on my home machine if it is ready before I go up to Colorado.

I also finally pulled out the tree of life quilt top out and decided I need to work on it. The problem is I had cut a 5/8" wide bias to make into a vine that finishes at a scant 1/4" when run thru the bias tape maker. I had yard of this cut out and was dreading making the bias. Well I just bit the bullet and hand sewed the pieces together. Since the join had to be dead on accurate I decided on the hand piecing for more control. Two days ago I took this now very, very long strip of 5/8" wide bias and slowly carefully pulled it thru the tape maker, it took quite some time and required a few breaks. As I went I very carefully rolled it around a empty toilet paper roll. I let that sit overnight so the pressed edges could set. Yesterday I pulled it out and hand basted the vine about half way around the quilt. That did not take as long as I thought it would. I am going to finish the basting today and then decide on where to put the vines that come off the main vine. Once those are cut and basted to the quilt I can start the applique. Since all the edges are pressed that should not take too long. Once that is done I can start adding the leaves and other things. I want a bird on the top in the center where the two vines meet and maybe a few other animals as well. I think ideas will come as I work on this.

Yeah, the prep work can be tedious but necessary.  Once it's done, then you have all the enjoyable applique time ahead of you!

Well I finished the main vine basting on the tree of life quilt. Tomorrow I will lay it out flat and decide where all the little side branches will go and get those started. The side branches will be under the main vine so that step has to happen first before I can begin applique on this. I may pull out my bag of green scraps I put together a long time ago and play with some leaf designs.

I also finished sewing all 7 of the hexi cubes together so they are now one big piece. The edges are all pressed under. Next step is to lay the backing out flat a base the hexi unit to the backing so I can applique that. I figure once that is done it will go pretty quick,

I sewed some more scrappy Hexie and now I am done!

i posted the green ones that I made into a small drag around. As I sew each round I cut out the excess backing, which leaves me with more Hexie...lol kind of like the song that never ends!

the original quilt so very many years ago was out of these blocks.  I think these were left over from step by step examples....

these are the two sets of scrap blocks I have sewn.  They could be cut into quarters or used as is.  No plan yet.  I may see if they work into a charity quilt or they might get send to Pat and Hilda!   Pat is so great at putting bits and pieces together, I’m sure she could use these!

left over is the book of ideas, templates, and scrappy cut always that will get donated!  Anyone want some fun?  Let me know...,

for now, it is on to something else!  Laundry, shower, cleaning up a couple messes.  Fun times!

Looks like you have really been going to town with those.

Saturday: June 13.2020   I was born.. oops sorry, that's David Copperfield.. LOL  I have completed simple grid quilting on 4 of 6 basted quilts.   I like to play on Saturdays, and often use it for desperately needed mental health SEWING time.  So I dug out a bin of 16 patch blocks, added to the snowballed blocks in that same bin and threw this up on my new Design Wall Model #5290.. (lol)  I have enough blocks for another top.  I make blocks like this with my scrap bins of cut sizes when I'm bored.  Then on other days when I'm bored I throw them together into a quilt top.    And thanks to my neighbor Karen who is not a quilter, who made a Costco run and was willing to pick up some coffee for me.  I'm trying to convert her into one of "US".. lol

Here's hoping YOUR Saturday June 13th is a fun as mine.  Made some homemade Beef-Brocolli and now eating my homemade Chocolate Malt ice cream on top of an ice cream vanilla sandwich with homemade Hot Fudge and chopped walnuts.  LIFE is good at my place today.  Good weather too.    HUGS all around.
