Well we made one truckload back to Colorado last Monday and are back in New Mexico for 2 more days to finish up the last of it.

Wow!  That is beautiful! You sure must have a lot of patience, I would be cross-eyed.

I have been slowly plodding along on a scrap quilt idea in between taking DH to a marathon of doctor office visits.

DH fell (while walking in our house) on April 26th, cracked his forehead really good on the ceramic tile floor and needed a trip via emergency squad to the hospital where he got four stitches, x-rays, etc. Results of this ER visit then subsequently caused twelve office visits to five various doctors during the month of May before he finally was told "all is well", "go home and be more careful" and I could stop being his chauffeur (chauffeuse?).

(There is nothing worse than a physician thrown into the role of a patient.)

In the meantime I've been solving 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles to save my sanity and gradually piecing these improv pieces for a small wallhanging idea from the book Scrappy Improv Quilting by Kelly Young.

It took some time to stitch these "improv pieces" which I will now cut into 3.5 inch strips and then subcut into 3.5 inch squares.  (The blue fabric with white polka dots in the uppermost improv piece is a 3 inch square to give you an idea of sizes on these fabrics.)

This is a classic example of quilt makers cutting up perfectly good fabric into little pieces and then stitching them back together to make a quilt. Only I am going to cut these "whatchamacallits" into smaller pieces yet again. confounded  The idea will be to try to make the 3.5 inch squares have multiple pieces.

that is going to be one heavy quilt with all those little pieces and seams.  Glad you are having fun.

thanks.  I'm pleased now it's done, but I didn't exactly enjoy it.  It is small and those seed beads!  I couldn't do it without my clip on magnifiers - these things are wonderful.  I used to only use them late at night, but I'm finding I want them almost all the time for hand sewing now, even when it's not black on black.  I'm looking forward to having an applique project again.  I was holding off starting another hand work project until this was done.

Your poor DH!!  Did he trip over something or his feet just tangle up on him?  I imagine that not only did it hurt physically, but did some damage to his pride.  12  Dr visits as a result? Holy cow! Seems like you go for one thing and they look for more stuff.  Hope he  is doing well and you can quit your taxi service job for now.

Love your piecing.  But then you know how I love scrappy.  Sure is going to be colorful an cheerful.

Yes, all of a sudden he felt like an old man. (As though being 81 and being crippled from a 50 year history of rheumatoid arthritis doesn't already qualify him for that category.) And of course the x-rays and lab tests seemed to reveal "more stuff" but but they were all results of deteriorating bones and treatments for his RA .... all big "nothingburgers" in medical slang .... but they had to be checked out.

I have been working on bright-colored jigsaw puzzles and using brights in this scrappy project just to keep my mood happy. Certainly seems to help.

is an idea I hadn't thought of, thanks Mel.  I do have a drawer of novelties that don't seem to get used all that much.

Our local quilt guild is having a speaker in June talk about finishing/edge treatments.  So I've decided to wait and see if she has any ideas I hadn't thought of.  It is a zoom presentation but I still might get some additional inspiration.  I've pretty much decided not to do the beads.  Right now I'm leaning towards these little swags from Bethanne Nemesh's book, (like the picture below but minus the beads).

Since I have beads quilted in all the red sashing, it feels like too many beads.  And I don't think I want to spend that long.  The swags are made from a basic flange, but gathered up every half inch or so.  the quilt is 60 x 70, so that would be about 500 swags.  going to test it 1st and see just how painful it may be.  And you need bias so they hang properly, so I may still have to go shopping.  Or I may get lazy and just do the cheater flange where it's part of the binding and you machine stitch to the front - I have enough of that.

PLUS my "next project" is calling me.  I really love prepared applique.  Here is the 1st section, a little pumpkin about the size of my palm.  Doesn't it look great!  Nothing is stitched yet, just starched and glued together.  I need to do the embroidery of my name 1st before I add any applique to make hooping easier.  But I was just itching to start playing with the fabric bits.
