and that is EXACTLY my plan! You are so clever to read my mind. :-) There is a technical way to securely start and finish the embroidery without needing to go through all 3 layers. It's not difficult; you just need to be careful.

1st applique block is done. Prep'ing two others now.
I'm thinking about putting 3 together, on point, then adding pieced rows all around. something like this:
