Red Deer doctor dies after attack at walk-in medical clinic

‘Horrific tragedy’

Mayor Tara Veer called the attack a “horrific tragedy” and a “senseless loss of life” in a statement posted online. A Red Deer doctor died Monday after being attacked inside an examination room at a walk-in clinic in the central Alberta city.

RCMP reported an assault with an unspecified weapon at Village Mall Walk-In Clinic Monday, and later upgraded the investigation to a homicide. A man is in custody and no one else is being sought. Anina Mullin, a witness who was inside the clinic, said she was standing in line when heard her doctor screaming for help.

“We heard the doctor yell, ‘Help, help! Call 911,’ screaming,” she said. “He sounded terrified.”

She said a receptionist asked if anyone could help the doctor. Two male patients ran to the examination room and looked inside.

Deng Mabiour of Red Deer, Alta., is charged with the first-degree murder of Dr. Walter Reynolds, a 45-year-old father of two, as well as other offences.

The 54-year-old appeared via a video link but wasn’t able to tell the judge if he understood the charges laid against him. Mabiour kept demanding the judge listen to him and said he wants a doctor.

RCMP have said the attack was not random and the two men knew each other through the clinic. They have not said if Mabiour was a patient, citing confidentiality.

Officers received a 911 call reporting an assault in progress at the Village Mall Walk-in Clinic just after 11 a.m. Monday. Mounties arrived within minutes.

One witness told media that she heard cries for help and a man in the clinic had a hammer and a machete.

Mabiour was arrested at the scene. Reynolds was rushed to hospital, where he died.

A vigil for Reynolds has been planned for Friday night at city hall. The province's chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, said during a COVID-19 briefing that people need to feel connected during their grief. She urged people to connect in safe ways.
