Honest question: Does he wear a pith helmet, or is it more of a fabric hat?

This is so important.

I've always thought of it as a pith helmet, until you just now led me to take a closer look at the photos of him, and now I'm not so sure.

It doesn't really matter, though.  All that matters is this thread's subject.

I, too, am glad it exists.

And yeah, that's exactly how I came about this question.  It's definitely a pith helmet in my mind, but not so much in the pictures.  But maybe it's supposed to be a pith helmet, and they just made a fabric one for the puppet?

That's a good guess.  Something more closely resembling a real pith helmet would've been heavier on Dave Goelz's hand.

Yes, a fabric version of a pith helmet to best suit his tiny head.

And I also enjoy the title of this thread.

I think a pith has a longer bill (but not always) and usually has a buckled strap over the bill.

So a floppy version that is pith-esque if not pith then?

I love this thread. I'd say more, but like the hat, I'm trying to be pith-y!

I'd go with "it's supposed to be a pith helmet but they made it out of fabric because it's a puppet."

If you look at the animated version of Matt, it very definitely looks like a pith helmet.

There's also the difference between the British military pith helmet (higher) and the more general "Safari hat" model used by stereotypical explorers everywhere. That's what Uncle Matt is aiming for, regardless of material. (In fact, it's nearly identical to the hats used on plush explorer animal dolls which I had in the eighties/early nineties.)

Of course, in the German clips, he's usually wearing a variation of the Tyrolean feathered hat, because Germany.
