Kristin Kreuk will star in The CW's 'Beauty and the Beast'

kristin-kreuk.jpgFormer "Smallville" star Kristin Kreuk has landed one of the lead roles in The CW's "Beauty and the Beast" pilot. (Hint: It's not the Beast.)

Kreuk will play an NYPD detective in the pilot, Deadline reports. The show is kinda-sorta based on the late-1980s CBS series that starred Linda Hamilton (whose character was a prosecutor) and Ron Perlman.

In the pilot, written by Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper ("Brothers & Sisters"), Kreuk's character, Catherine, was a witness to the murder of her mother several years prior to the start of the series. The Beast in turn killed the killers, and Catherine has been looking for him ever since. The Beast, meanwhile, is the survivor of "a military experiment gone terribly wrong," per Deadline.

That's a fairly significant departure from the setup of the '80s series, in which Perlman's Vincent helps heal Hamilton's Catherine after she's attacked and left for dead. When Catherine sees Vincent for the first time, he explains to her that he was born the way he is.

"Beauty and the Beast" will be the first series-regular role for Kreuk since she left "Smallville" a few seasons back. She had a recurring part on "Chuck" in 2010 and, oddly enough, was also approached for ABC's "Beauty and the Beast" pilot this season. That version sounds as though it will lean more to the fairy-tale side of the story.

'Beauty and the Beast' casting: Kristin Kreuk's Beast is Jay Ryan

jay-ryan-headshot.jpgThe Powers That Be behind The CW's "Beauty and the Beast" pilot have finally found their beast. Thirty-one-year-old Jay Ryan, a New Zealand-based actor known in the U.S. for small roles on "Terra Nova" and "Legend of the Seeker," will play Vincent Koslow. Koslow, the victim of a military experiment gone horribly wrong, now looks like a monster.

His "beauty," Catherine, is set to be played by "Smallville" girl-next-door Kristin Kreuk. Catherine witnessed her mother's murder nine years ago, but remembers that the murderer was killed by a Beast quickly after.

And then they solve crimes! No, but seriously, they solve crimes.

Though Ryan isn't well-known to American audiences, he's a TV veteran overseas, having appeared in "Neighbours," "Go Girls," and "Sea Patrol," among other series. Also, he just looks like he belongs on The CW, doesn't he?

'Beauty and the Beast: First look at Kristin Kreuk's return to The CW

beauty-and-the-beast-the-cw-kristin-kreuk.jpgThe CW's newest Thursday night drama, "Beauty and the Beast," will have a lot to live up to when it inherits the 9 p.m. post-"The Vampire Diaries" time slot in the fall. The network announced that the shows will be paired together on its official Fall 2012 TV schedule, bringing former "Smallville" star Kristin Kreuk back to the network on the night where she used to reside.

"'Beauty and the Beast' takes a classic love story and adds a procedural element," says CW President Mark Pedowitz. While "The Secret Circle" didn't survive more than one year after the excellence of "TVD," "B&B's" supernatural element and CW royalty make the two shows a perfect match in theory. Check out the description of the show (and the first photo of Kreuk and her handsome beast, played by Jay Ryan) and let us know if you agree!

Here's The CW's description of the show:

Detective Catherine Chandler (Kreuk) is a smart, no-nonsense homicide detective. Several years earlier, Catherine witnessed the murder of her mother at the hands of two gunmen. Catherine would have been killed too, but someone -- or something -- saved her. No one has ever believed her, but she knows it wasn't an animal that attacked the assassins...it was human. Years have passed, and Catherine is a strong, confident, capable police officer, working alongside her equally talented partner, Tess (Nina Lisandrello). While investigating a murder, Catherine discovers a clue that leads her to a handsome doctor named Vincent Keller (Ryan), who was reportedly killed by enemy fire while serving in Afghanistan in 2002. Catherine learns that Vincent is actually still alive and that it was he who saved her many years before. For mysterious reasons that have forced him to live outside of traditional society, Vincent has been in hiding for the past 10 years to guard his secret -- when he is enraged, he becomes a terrifying beast, unable to control his super-strength and heightened senses. Catherine agrees to protect his identity in return for any insight he may have into her mother's murder. Thus begins a complex relationship between Catherine and Vincent, who are powerfully drawn to each other yet understand that their connection is extremely dangerous for both of them.

'Beauty and the Beast': Kristin Kreuk gets saved on The CW this fall

Kristin Kreuk is back on The CW in "Beauty and the Beast," her first regular TV role since she left "Smallville."

Kreuk plays Catherine Chandler, a homicide detective who years earlier witnessed the murder of her mother -- which you can in turn witness in the clip above, what we're assuming is something of a prologue in the pilot. The gunmen would have killed her too, were it not for the beast (Jay Ryan of "Terra Nova") who saved her.

In the present, Catherine comes across the beast -- actually a man named Vincent -- again and discovers his secret: "When he is enraged, he becomes a terrifying beast, unable to control his super-strength and heightened senses."

The CW's "Beauty and the Beast," which will air at 9 p.m. ET Thursdays next season, is a loose remake of the 1980s CBS series that starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman, who wore a whole lot of prosthetic makeup for his role as Vincent. But this is The CW, and we're guessing the new show won't keep Ryan's face hidden unless he's Hulking out.

What do you think of the clip? Will you be watching "Beauty and the Beast" this fall?
