'Green Arrow' pilot almost a go at The CW

smallville-justin-hartley.jpgThe CW is planning a Green Arrow series, according to Deadline Hollywood, and will likely order a pilot of the new show very soon.

There's one catch -- it's not a "Smallville" spinoff, and Justin Hartley, who played the character on the long-running superhero series, has nothing to do with it.

The new hourlong drama would take the iconic character, a.k.a. ultra-rich former Star City mayor Oliver Queen, and set him in a new world completely different from the comic books (or the world established on the network's "Smallville," which ran for 10 years).

Greg Berlanti ("Everwood," "No Ordinary Family") and Marc Guggenheim ("Eli Stone"), who wrote "The Green Lantern" together, teamed up with Andrew Kreisberg ("Fringe," "The Vampire Diaries") for the project, which will likely be directed by David Nutter ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," "Supernatural").

What do you think about a Hartley-less Green Arrow? This is a completely different world, so we understand a new actor taking the part, but since Hartley was so good on "Smallville," maybe he should at least get first crack at the role. Hartley recently guest starred in an episode of "Chuck" and can next be seen in an upcoming episode of "Castle" alongside fellow CW alum Hilarie Burton.

'Green Arrow': Stephen Amell cast in the lead role

Stephen Amell.jpgThe lead for the new CW show "Arrow" has been found! Stephen Amell will play the lead role of a vigilante superhero who fights crime with archery and technology using Arrow's secret identity as Oliver Queen, wealthy playboy and billionaire in Star City, according to Deadline.

Justin Hartley played the role on the long-running CW series, "Smallville." Dinah Laurel Lance will also be a featured character, though not as the Black Canary and using her middle name "Laurel." Oliver Queen's mother Moira is still alive in the present day, with Oliver Queen returning to "Starling City" after people believed he was dead for five years.

Amell has appeared on a number of shows, including a turn as Brady on "The Vampire Diaries." Are you guys excited for this one? Missing Justin and "Smallville?" Will this fill your longing for a comic book series on The CW? We're actually really excited for this one. Give us your opinion of the casting.

'Supernatural' demon Katie Cassidy scores Black Canary role in Green Arrow pilot

katie-cassidy-black-canary.jpgThe CW is staying in the Katie Cassidy business. After significant roles on "Supernatural," "Melrose Place," and "Gossip Girl," Cassidy has now been cast in a lead role in "Arrow," the network's Green Arrow pilot.

Cassidy (daughter of David Cassidy) plays Dinah Laurel Lance, a lawyer working with the very unglamorous City Necessary Resources Initiative. She's got a romantic history with Oliver Queen, Green Arrow's rich playboy alter ego played by Stephen Amell of "The Vampire Diaries" and "Hung" fame. In fact, according to the pilot, it was Laurel -- not the trappings of wealth and luxury -- that Queen missed most while he was lampooned on an island.

Of course, fans of DC Comics know that Laurel has an intriguing superhero bloodline. According to the lore, Laurel is the daughter of Dinah Drake, the original Black Canary, and is next in line to become the Black Canary herself.

The pilot was written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg. It's set to be directed by David Nutter, who, of course, was behind the "Smallville" pilot... but don't expect to see a similar show. Despite the DC roots, this universe is considerably darker and more adult than the one we knew in "Smallville."

After Cassidy won us over in "Supernatural" and "Harper's Island," we were left unsatisfied by the writing for her characters in "Melrose Place" and "Gossip Girl." Here's hoping that Laurel proves to be the role that actually keeps Cassidy on our screens.

The casting was first reported by TVLine.

"Arrow" First Image Released
Check out the first official image of Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen/Arrow.

[via press release from Warner Bros. Television]

Please find attached the first image from The CW's new pilot ARROW, starring Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen and Arrow.

· After being marooned for five years on a remote island, former billionaire playboy Oliver Queen returns with a mysterious agenda and a lethal set of new skills that he uses in a war on crime.

· Arrow's suit was designed by three-time Oscar(R)-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood.

· ARROW pilot director/executive producer David Nutter said: "When I directed the pilot for Smallville, I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero. ARROW is a different show - darker and harder-edged - but it's the same core idea. We're creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. Colleen Atwood's great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort."

ARROW is executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg and David Nutter, who is directing, from a teleplay by Kreisberg & Guggenheim, story by Berlanti & Guggenheim. Melissa Kellner Berman is co-executive producer.

ARROW is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television and is based upon characters appearing in comic books and graphic novels published by DC Comics.
