ABC News’ “Good Morning America” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (4.750 million) for the week of December 5, 2016, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “GMA” outperformed “Today” (4.688 million) by 62,000.

“GMA” was up over the previous week in Total Viewers (+2% – 4.750 million vs. 4.636 million).    

Season to date, “GMA” is the No. 1 morning newscast in Total Viewers, leading “Today” by 123,000 (4.653 million vs. 4.530 million) to take the top spot at this point of the season for the 5th year in a row.

During the week, “GMA” defeated “CBS This Morning” in Total Viewers (+22%/+849,000), Adults 25-54 (+27%/+321,000) and Adults 18-49 (+28%/+237,000).

From 8:00-10:00 p.m. up against NBC’s “The Voice” and CBS’ first-run 2-hour comedy block, ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight” grew from its week-ago premiere by 18% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/4 vs. 1.1/4). In addition, the show was up from its telecast on the same night last year (4.4 million and 1.1/3 on 12/14/15) with Total Viewers (+25%) and Adults 18-49 (+18%).

Please note:  ABC’s Monday lineup was preempted in Boston for local NFL coverage (1.6% U.S.)

“The Real O’Neals”: L3 = 4.1 million/1.2 rating and L7 = 4.4 million/1.3 rating

 Live + Same Day Results:

ABC Tuesday Prime (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 3.9 million and 1.0/4 in AD18-49):
As all 4 of its comedies grew week to week, ABC once again delivered Tuesday’s Top 2 comediesin Adults 18-49 with “The Middle” (1.6/6) and “American Housewife” (1.5/5), dominating Fox’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (0.9/4) and “New Girl” (0.8/3) head to head by 78% and 88% at 8:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respectively.  Other competition on the night included NBC’s finale of “The Voice” (9:00-11:00 p.m.) and CBS’ mid-season Tuesday drama finales.

  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Middle” increased week to week in Total Viewers (+8% – 6.6 million vs. 6.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (+14% – 1.6/6 vs. 1.4/5), equaling a best-since-premiere rating – since 10/11/16. 

 

  • At 8:30 p.m., ABC’s “American Housewife” grew over the prior week in Total Viewers (+10% – 5.6 million vs. 5.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (+7% – 1.5/5 vs. 1.4/5). 
  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat” built on the previous week’s telecast in Total Viewers (+5% – 4.1 million vs. 3.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (+9% – 1.2/4 vs. 1.1/4). “Fresh Off the Boat” was the night’s No. 3 comedy, outdelivering both of Fox’s sitcoms in viewers and young adults.

 

  • At 9:30 p.m., ABC’s “The Real O’Neals” gained week to week in Total Viewers (+10% – 3.3 million vs. 3.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (+13% – 0.9/3 vs. 0.8/3).  “The Real O’Neals” was Tuesday’s No. 4 comedy in viewers and young adults (tie).
  • At 10:00 p.m. against the final hour of “The Voice” finale, a primetime repeat of “Jimmy Kimmel Live: Rogue One a Star Wars Story” added 1.8 million viewers to its original late-night broadcast this past Friday (2.2 million on 12/9/16), bringing its 2-night total for the episode to 4.0 million viewers.

ABC Wednesday Prime (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 6.0 million and 1.5/6 in AD18-49): 
On a night of finale/premiere competition from Fox with the mid-season closer of “Empire” into the debut of “Star” and from CBS with the 3-hour season finale of “Survivor,” ABC’s Wednesday lineup delivered gains across the night.  In fact, “The Goldbergs” (+13%), “Speechless” (+23%) and “black-ish” (+33%) scored double-digit Adult 18-49 growth week to week. The winter finale of “Designated Survivor” jumped by 1.0 million viewers week to week to the deliver show’s biggest audience in 2 months.
 

  • Season to date, ABC is up on Wednesday over the same point last season in viewers, young adults and all key Men demos:  Total Viewers (+16%), Adults 18-49 (+4%), Men 18-34 (+8%), Men 18-49 (+20%) and Men 25-54 (+19%).  In fact, ABC is delivering 5-year highs on the night in Total Viewers and Men 25-54, and a 4-year high in Men 18-49 – since the first 12 weeks of Fall 2011 and 2012, respectively.
  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Goldbergs” increased week to week in Total Viewers (+13% – 6.1 million vs. 5.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (+13% – 1.7/6 vs. 1.5/6), drawing its largest audience in 4 weeks – since 11/16/16. 

 

  • At 8:30 p.m., ABC’s “Speechless” shot up from the prior week in Total Viewers (+17% – 5.4 million vs. 4.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (+23% – 1.6/6 vs. 1.3/5) to deliver its best numbers in 1 month – since 11/16/16.
  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “Modern Family” held even with its most recent original 2 weeks ago in Total Viewers (6.8 million) and grew 8% with Adults 18-34 (1.3/5 vs. 1.2/6), equaling a 9-week high on the latter measure – since 10/12/16.  

 

  • In the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC’s “black-ish” spiked by more than 30% week to week in Total Viewers (+31% – 5.5 million vs. 4.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (+33% – 1.6/5 vs. 1.2/4) with its most watched telecast overall in 4 weeks – since 11/16/16.
  • At 10:00 p.m., the winter finale of ABC’s “Designated Survivor” surged week to week by 1.0 million viewers (6.2 million vs. 5.2 million) and gained 9% among Adults 18-49 (1.2/4 vs. 1.1/4), marking the series’ most watched telecast overall in 2 months – since 10/12/16. On average, “Designated Survivor” was TV’s No. 1 gainer of Fall 2016 in Live + 7 Day TV Playback, spiking over its L+SD numbers by +7.1 million Total Viewers, emerging as the first-ever series to deliver a larger audience this season in the L+7 numbers than in L+SD (7.1 million vs. 7.0 million).  In addition, the new ABC drama added +1.9 Adult 18-49 rating points in L+7, more than doubling its L+SD delivery (+119%).

20/20 (10-11pm - 5.1 million and 1.0/4 in AD18-49): Surging over its repeat Shark Tank lead-in on Friday at 10pm, ABC's 20/20 ranked #1 in the hour with Adults 18-49 (1.0/4-tie) and outdrew NBC's Dateline head to head in the slot with Total Viewers (5.1 million vs. 4.9 million). 20/20 jumped by double digits week to week in Total Viewers (+31% - 5.1 million vs. 3.9 million), Adults 18-49 (+25% - 1.0/4 vs. 0.8/3) and Adults 25-54 (+18% - 1.3/4 vs. 1.1/4). ABC's Last Man Standing and Dr. Ken Hit Season Highs on Friday

At 8pm on Friday, ABC's Last Man Standing grew week to week with Total Viewers (+3% - 6.8 million vs. 6.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (+9% - 1.2/5 vs. 1.1/5), drawing its most watched telecast this season and matching a season high with young adults. Last Man Standing won its half-hour and ranked as the #1 TV show of the night in Adults 18-49.

At 8:30pm, ABC's Dr. Ken was up over the prior week by 5% in Total Viewers (4.6 million vs. 4.4 million) and by 13% in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs. 0.8/3), earning its 2nd largest audience this season and tying a season high in young adults.

From 7:00-11:00 p.m. against a big game on NBC’s Sunday Night Football (Cowboys-Buccaneers) and an NFL-overrun fueled CBS (Patriots-Broncos), ABC’s annual rebroadcast of the 1965 theatrical “The Sound of Music” topped its telecast on the same Sunday last year by 10% in Total Viewers (5.3 million vs. 4.8 million) and by 10% in Adults 18-49 (1.1/4 vs. 1.0/3).  In fact during the movie’s final 2 hours from 9:00-11:00 p.m., ABC stood as the No. 1 entertainment network in Adults 18-49, beating CBS’ mid-season drama finales by 18% (1.3/4 vs. 1.1/3 for “NCIS: LA,” “Madam Secretary” and “Elementary”).

ABC’s ‘The View’ Outperforms ‘The Talk’ Across the Board, Posting Its Largest Total Viewer Lead Over the CBS Program Since the Week of Its Season Premiere

Week to Week, ‘The View’ Posts Gains in All Key Target Demos,
 Hitting a 5-Week High in Women 25-54 With
Its 2nd-Best Performance of the Season

Year to Year and Season to Date, ‘The View’ Sees Increases Across the Board

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.931 million Total Viewers, 565,000 Women 25-54 and 416,000 Women 18-49 during the week of December 12, 2016, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” outdelivered CBS’ “The Talk” (2.611 million, 453,000 and 305,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+320,000), Women 25-54 (+112,000) and Women 18-49 (+111,000), posting its largest Total Viewer lead over the CBS program since the week of its season premiere – since w/o 9/5/16.

“The View” scored week-to-week gains (2.908 million, 534,000 and 394,000, respectively, for w/o 12/5/16) in Total Viewers (+1%), Women 25-54 (+6%) and Women 18-49 (+6%).  In fact, “The View” hit a 5-week high in Women 25-54 (since 11/7/16) with its 2nd-best performance of the season.

“The View” saw gains year to year (2.593 million, 531,000 and 375,000, respectively, for w/o 12/14/15) in Total Viewers (+13%), Women 25-54 (+6%) and Women 18-49 (+11%).

Season to date, “The View” is posting gains across the board compared to the same point last season: Total Viewers (+14% – 2.947 million vs. 2.576 million), Women 25-54 (+5% – 548,000 vs. 523,000) and Women 18-49 (+7% – 415,000 vs. 389,000) 

In addition, “The View” leads CBS’ “The Talk” in Total Viewers (+7% – 2.947 million vs. 2.755 million), Women 25-54 (+12% – 548,000 vs. 491,000) and Women 18-49 (+21% – 415,000 vs. 344,000).

ABC Tuesday Prime (8:00-11:00 p.m. - 3.7 million and 1.0/4 in AD18-49): Featuring encore animated holiday specials from 8:00-9:00 p.m. (“Toy Story That Time Forgot”/“Shrek the Halls”) leading into a winning performance for “The Year 2016” from 9:0011:00 p.m., ABC won Tuesday’s primetime by 25% in Adults 18-49 (1.0/4 vs. 0.8/3 –NBC and CBS tied). Anchored by ABC News’ Robin Roberts, “The Year” featured details of all the big stories from 2016. 
 
“The Year 2016” (9:00-11:00 p.m. – 3.8 million and 1.0/4 in AD18-49):  From 9:00-11:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Year 2016” won the time period over NBC’s star-studded Tony Bennett holiday special head to head by 25% in Adults 18-49 (1.0/4 vs. 0.8/3) and by 8% in Adults 25-54 (1.3/4 vs. 1.2/4). “The Year 2016” also ranked No. 1 in its 2-hour slot across all key Women and Men demographics (18-34/18-49/25-54).  “The Year” stood as the No. 1 TV show on Tuesday in Adults 18-49 (tie) and despite increased competition year to year held exactly even with its broadcast on the year-ago night (1.0/4 on 12/22/15).
