I've got the Maxair system on my bike , and slip on exhausts , re jetted to maxair  specs. seems to have more grunt in mid range than my mates xvs 1100. I'm happy with the outcome as they hidden under the tank, . changed the standard air box for a spike , but it's just for show.

Been long time ago but its one of two things or maybe both ... just can't remember.   Keeps your ass a bit cooler ... deflects some of the heat not letting it come up towards seat OR It might of been there in case you over filled gas tank that it would run down back and not over the top of your hot engine.

Either way I think most of the people here removed it and I surly would not spend money to replace it.   Timm
