whirring/clapping sound vs maintenance/checkup   Technical-Bikes

Hi all,

I bought a 2000 V Star 1100 custom and I`ve been watching some VERY well made maintenance/checkup videos.

I bought it at 27K Km... I`m now nearing 31K but I don't know the history of the maintenances done on this bike.

I watched one Video where the guy said that the valves need to be checked up every 4000 Km...

When I bought it I had 50/50 pipes (Great sound but with My tinnitus, I can't enjoy the roaring sounds very long, so I've put back the original pipes)

and since then I detected a whirring/flapping sound coming from the front of the engine (somewhere around the valves springs)

Now I'm only a part time Mechanic so please use leyman's terms if you're to help on this one.

My question is..... could it be the valve adjustment that needs to be corrected ?

Can I finish the warm season without having to take apart the whole top with no danger to the engine ?

Others here Know a lot more than I do but I can tell you a couple of things. Firstly, some valve noise is normal. Secondly, If you want to check your clearances it's not necessary to take apart the whole top end. Also, I'm not so sure about that 4000 mile interval. Once they are set they rarely move and it takes a lot more than 4000 miles worth of wear and tear to significantly effect clearances.

If you are worried about it by all means check it out. It's really not a big deal.

I would certainly check them for peace of mind since you don't know any history. Some info from the wKB   V-Star 1100 Wiki Knowledge Base - Valves (google.com)
