I just noticed that my battery cover is rather hot. Is this normal and somehow I never noticed or have I blown out the rear exhaust gasket ?

Check the battery and charging system.

Will do. I did install a new oem reg/rec about a year ago. The last few weeks I've been getting just the least little bit of popping. Usually just a single pop when I let off on the throttle. Not all the time but often enough to make me wonder what's up.

Battery and charging system seem to be OK. Soapy water shows a stream of tiny bubbles at the union of pipe and header. Not a whole lot at fast idle but I have to believe it's greater at highway speed. In the absence of a new gasket I schmeered some sealant in there and torqued it back down. No bubbles at idle, we'll see what happens when I get a chance to ride. New gaskets on order. I'm cautiously optimistic.
