What you posted is certainly one way to check the oil level. However, with the QuikView you can stay seated on the bike and keep both feet on the ground while you look at the mirror. At night you can easily point a small flashlight at the QuikView mirror to check the oil level. I did it numerous times.
BTW, In a ten month wonderful period spanning 2004 and 2005 I put 30,000+ miles on my V-Star.
