2020 v.11.7.1.78 Drawing Layout Crash   Version 11

I am using this version of 2020 on a Windows 10 laptop with an AMD Radeon R5 1GB graphics card.  When bringing up the drawing layout that I previously created, 2020 crashes.  I have reset the registry twice. Still having the same problem. Not sure why this is happening all of a sudden. I read somewhere that the Microsoft Visual C++ files may be either missing or corrupted.  Any suggestions short of a clean install?

I reckon at least 90% of 2020 crashes are down to the graphics drivers. I'm on an R9 2GB and using 17.4.4 which seems stable.

I would 100% definitely try a different driver version before anything else. Try letting Windows update the driver first and if that doesn't work, go to the Radeon site and get the latest driver here: https://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Also, if you have an embedded graphics adapter such as the Intel (most notebooks do), ensure that those drivers are up to date as well. Lastly, make sure that 2020 is set to run with the Radeon rather than the Intel graphics processor.

Thanks for your input. I am new to the AMD products.  If it's not to much trouble can you send me a bigger screen capture of the image you posted?  It's a thumbnail size, and can't read text and images when enlarged.  I did not know there was a utility for assigning the graphics card for 2020. I downloaded and installed the AMD utility from the support section of their site that is supposed to keep the driver up to date.  It's called radeon-crimson-relive-17.11.1. My HP laptop does not give the "model" number of the graphics card any where I search.  It just lists it as AMD Radeon(TM) R5 Graphics. I noticed on their support download page there are different "models"( R5 M300,R5 M300, R5 240, etc.). The AMD utility updated the driver version to 23.20.788.00(11/2/17).

To get the exact model, open Device Manager (type those words into the search box) and then click the arrow against Display Adapters. That will tell you which version you are on.

Double click the AMD entry and it will take you to the info for the adapter. Go to Driver and try clicking Update Driver. Reboot after it updates (IF it updates).

The AMD Manager can be opened by going to your Taskbar Notification area and clicking on the Catalyst/Radeon Settings icon - the one that is in the middle row, second from left.

The Radeon Settings page will come up and looks like this

Go to Preferences

Go to Additional Settings and this should pop up

Make sure Design.exe is listed and set to High Performance. If using V11.7 onwards, make sure you ad LeRendu.exe as well. If you don't get the above screens then you will have to google it as I can only show you what comes up on mine. I try and stay away from AMD now and typically ONLY recommend NVidia.

If the pictures are showing too small then sorry, I capture at full resolution so they are probably being resized by the forum.

The other thing to do is set the defaults

I have to be honest and say that the AMD drivers are crap and I am never sure if my notebook is running Design and LeRendu on the AMD adapter as no matter what I do, the AMD Manager says this:

And I am running an external monitor AND 2020 Design AND a render all of which should have forced it to use the AMD

Thank you again for your detailed help. I will look into those adjustments this evening.  Also thank you for the Settings Utility you created.  There is such a need for a tool like that.

No problem.

I created the utility out of my own needs. Took about 5 minutes and I'd wasted so much time before!
