There was another part to the link that said the colt went to vet and I guess get him a nurse mare? I believe this is what Rachel Alexandra had after foaling Valentina, but through prayer and determination, Barbara was able to save her.

Did her new owner buy her in foal, or did she breed her?

What I gather is that the person who bought her at auction bought her in foal to Frosted with the objective to retire her from any further breedings.  Woman has mainly Standardbreds and a few TBs.  Grateful that she tried!

I am so mad at the previous owner. This mare deserved better. 

 She sure did deserve better. very sad.
