Second Start Thoroughbreds looking out for the Fort Erie horses...

Three Chimneys presents Good News Friday: A Second Start for Fort Erie's Horses

The near-certain closure of Ontario's Fort Erie racetrack at year’s end means hundreds of people face the loss of their jobs - possibly their careers - and an uncertain future.

It could also mean an uncertain future for the hundreds of racehorses that call the 115-year-old track their home. But thanks to the efforts of a two-year-old program, those horses that won't be shipping to other tracks have an excellent chance of finding a new home and a new career.

It's great that she such positive reactions from the trainers, but I think most small time trainers are like that, are they not? They are doing such a wonderful job, kudos to them and their orgainzation! And how wonderful that Three Chimney's is donating!!!

I believe more are like that than not, I know I've seen it is that way at my local track....and that's small.

Neat story in our paper today about one of this year's HOF inductees, Planet, and his local connection.

The great Secretariat was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1974, a year after his remarkable Triple Crown run.

Secretariat's Hanover County neighbor, Planet, another historically significant horse, has had to wait a little longer for the same honor.

How much longer? Well, servants at the old Bullfield plantation used to hide Planet in the woods whenever Union soldiers came around.

I love it Linda!   Love that they are inducting a pre-Civil war horse into the HOF!  The story is amazing.  And amazing that Planet survived the Civil War.  Also really cool about the train that ran past that Viriginia plantation back then to Saratoga.  Need one of those to get you and Greybird up here, lol.

What a wonderful story! Too bad the horse, and its' history got lost all these years. So glad The Meadows was written, so this horse and his story could come to light!
