This is not Lasix, but I think it is a good step towards zero drugs in race horses.

California board considering zero-tolerance ban of clenbuterol on race day

ARCADIA, Calif. – Clenbuterol, a bronchodilator that also is sometimes used to build muscle, may be prohibited at any level in post-race tests for Thoroughbreds in California as early as this summer, according to discussions at the California Horse Racing Board track safety and medication committee meeting on Wednesday.

They vote to phase use of it on raceday, won't allow Romans to speak....

I've been watching the tweets - I'm sorry they did not let Roman's speak.

This is key:

The rule also includes a provision allowing the commission to reconsider the rule as of Sept. 1, 2013. Supporters of the new rule said that the provision would allow the committee to support a rollback of the ban if other states do not pass similar rules and the prohibition leads to weaker racing on the Kentucky circuit

I don't think the actual vote by the 15 comissioners has happened yet but is being voted on now.

First paragraph of that article

A committee of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission voted Monday in support of a regulation to phase out the raceday use of the anti-bleeding medication furosemide starting with 2-year-olds in 2013.

Now whether there are more than one committee, I guess remains to be seen....perhaps they wouldn't let anyone speak as they think all voices had been heard already?

I think it's pretty much a done deal, but...

Committee passes reg 4-1. Rule now goes in front of full commission, meeting at 1:30.

From Paulick...

  • about 21 seconds ago Not so confident Lasix phase out will pass now. Tide seems to be turning against. 7-7 deadlock? Tom Conway very impassioned in opposition
  • about a minute ago Commission Michael Pitino passed on commenting on Lasix debate. Tom Conway says "listen to Veterinarians and trainers." He'll vote against
  • about 2 minutes ago Franklin Kling seems unsure how to vote; Ned Bonnie a longtime hay oats water guy. Jerry Yon worries passage of Lasix ban could be mistake

Perhaps, Dale and other trainers went to the rest of the commision when they were denied speaking.......

To repeat: motion to phase out raceday furosemide does NOT pass
