A lot to unpack there...

Yes, and they were right.
BerrySteph said:Assad is the problem, the Ayatollahs are the problem.
Right again.
Others, clearly, become a matter of politics.
Anyone guilty of mass murder is a problem.
I am sure you would put the US in that category.
But there is a difference between the US fighting in a war with allies and the actions of a mass murderer like KJU.
Oh, and you forgot to add Pol Pot to the list of poor little politicians who got a bad wrap.

Why was Saddam a problem? He was an Islamic dictator as we must hate and fear? No, he wasn't - his rule was secular. Tariq Aziz was a Christian until we murdered him too. Under Saddam girls went to school, minorities were protected and alcohol was sold. The archaeology of the cradle of civilisation was protected.
Have we done better than Saddam or have we created a Holocaust II with at least 2 million people murdered for the sake of being brown?
Was Saddam a problem because he'd attacked Iran? You don't believe that. Or if you do believe it, I can very quickly put you straight.
Was Saddam a problem because he invaded Kuwait? Maybe - but that ignores the elephant in the room - the US gave him the green light to do it. Three times the US did that, Glaspie, Tuttweiler and Kelly, once in Baghdad, twice in Washington.

I can't defend Gaddafi - except to say he was so much better than the puppets we're trying to prop up now.
But I can defend Assad - a secular dictatorship we've tried and partly succeeded into turning into another Beardy Head-Chopping Central.

I don't know what you mean - what have Hamas or Hezbollah ever done to us?
So benign is the stronger of the two gangs to our interests that we have to falsely accuse it of a bombing in Argentina (clue - the only picture you've ever seen shows the explosion having been from within the building - the belated claim that the car drove in there before exploding would be unique in history and is totally unsupported).
The Bulgaria Burgas bombing looks like an own goal by a gang of dedicated assassins. Lets say it again - Hamas and Hezbollah have never attacked anyone other than Israel - and that only in feeble retaliation (until 2006, not so feeble - also successful, so far).
Oh, and I believe (its actually proved) that Ostrovsky was a Mossad member - and I believe the throw-away story he tells (in both books) that it was the Israelis who killed the 241 American marines and 70 odd French soldiers in Beirut Bombings 1983. Hezbollah only existed in Iran at the time - arrived in Lebanon with a press conference in 1985.

There's a huge difference between those actions - we murdered some 5 million Koreans in order to colonise their country. KJU couldn't possibly be as as evil as we've been. He's only survived because he can retaliate - the only reason that Saddam and Gaddafi were murdered.
Jenifer (Zarknorph) said:Oh, and you forgot to add Pol Pot to the list of poor little politicians who got a bad wrap.
Pol Pot was never attacked by us - Vietnam took him down in 1979 and we continued to recognise him until at least 1991 and effectively to his death.
Is there any part of my thesis you wish to explore in any more depth or do you prefer I put on a tin-foil helmet?
How about 911 - I hate the conspiracy theorists because they've covered up the massive scandal of Bush & Cheney, at the least, opening the door for it to happen.

You might have posted that deliberately?
I'm not sure, I've caught you out so often and so ridiculously that I'm no longer really prepared to give you the benefit of the doubt.

First of all, it's ERUDITE.
Secondly, it's not my problem if you cannot understand nuance.

He was/is a dictator - but he's a secular dictator. Syria was not a hell-hole - even though it was groaning under the weight of a huge number of Palestinian refugees. Assad protected minorities.
Assad survived - because the entire administration and all the police are invested in his secular regime. He sent girls to school, compare that with your friends the Saudis.
Our attempts to get rid of him have (100% predictably!) caused a huge explosion in crime and an appalling disaster on all of his people and all the people who make society run.
Remember what Ed Husain, now a top government advisor on handling extremism, said:
... Working for the British Council in Saudi Arabia was a radically different experience from my time in Syria.
Students in Syria were intellectually engaged with current affairs and progress in science and technology, brought up subjects for discussion in class, and enjoyed comparing Western culture with Arab traditions.
Moreover, British Council managers in Syria fully understood and helped realize the raison d'etre of the Council: to promote modem Britain in all its diversity. Thus gay and Asian teachers, for example, were welcomed and supported.
In Saudi Arabia I felt as though I were working for a Saudi organization, not a British one. Nepotism, corruption, sexism, and racism were tolerated because we could not be seen to offend 'local culture'.
Why is the British Council in Syria more boisterous than its counterpart in Saudi, when we consider Syria to be part of the 'axis of evil', and Saudi Arabia an 'ally' in the fight against terrorism? https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=eb-zCgAAQBAJ&pg=PT236
This is a Zionist enforcer in another Forum stating the obvious, the Saudi culture is nasty whereas the Iranian one (so far, before we destroy it) is charming.
Just think of [Saudi Arabia] as Beardy Headchopper Central.
Is it just a coincidence that the perfect caliphate that IS wanted to build seems a lot like Saudi Arabia?
Everyone I know who has travelled to Iran says what an interesting place it is and how interesting and friendly the people are. I've never heard similar tributes from the ones who spent time in Saudi Arabia.
So the US and the UK has befriended a very dictatorial and very repressive regime - I think its the worst on earth.
We've sided with the bad guys against two sets of (slightly) good guys!

Can I comment?
Secular dictator? Nice 'euphemism', if that's the right description.
You know who else were secular dictators? Augusto Pinochet and Rafael Videla et al. They killed Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Agnostics, etc. Religion didn't matter as long as they're Communist, Socialists, Labor Union members, just plain PITA to them.
Should I add François Duvalier, Rafael Trujillo and the Somoza Clan?
Edited because I'm not an erudiateed

The Assad clan have slaughtered their own people relentlessly over the last 50 or so years
There is no possible Defense of any tyrant least of all scum such as Assad
Today there are somewhere between 500,000 to 600,000 dead in Syria as Assad fights to retain his brutal grip and millions now displaced ,Syria is now a failed state .
Lets make Assad also an Emperor like his distant brother another brutal leader KYU
