Can you explain, in words of one syllable, why it's so dry?

Is it a case of wet cold winds from the South, as warm up over the land mass and don't shed their water?

I'm not sure I'm aware of anything like that anywhere else.

Dumb clouds.

Basically... All the rain the clouds have gets dumped in the tropical zone, so there is none left for anything further south.

That is the simplest explanation I can give.

Winds from the North? North-East maybe?

No trees to generate more rain.

I don't think that can be right.

Trees make rain, rain makes trees... rainforests... trees... rain...

After the tropical zone ends there is basically nothing but scrub.
