I doubt if Australia has construction codes that consider the possibilities of earthquakes.

We had a 5.9 quake centered in Livermore, California which did a lot of damage inside of homes but not much to structures because of building codes.  I remembered that one.  I also witnessed the 7.1 Loma Prieta quake in California that was much worse and damaged highways and buildings.  I was getting off of work when that one hit but our home was not damaged at all because it was only about five years old and the construction standards were pretty high.

Salt Lake City in Utah is considered the most vulnerable city in the US for earthquake damage because of weak construction codes.
