Colombia: Meet the candidate vying to be Bogota's first female mayor

Claudia López, a center-left candidate who is openly gay, is vying to become the first female mayor of the Colombian capital Bogota. “I feel deeply proud of the woman I am, with my virtues and my shortcomings, which obviously are many, and I make an effort every day to improve,” says López, who is among the leading candidates to win the election and whose victory would make history in a nation that has historically been governed by men of the liberal and conservative elites.

There are a lot of aspects to the struggle. Hate crimes against gays are only a part of the topic. Courage, marginalization, alienization, struggle, family, pride and celebration are also included, I would think.

If we want to get beyond the simplistic slogans, and if we want to support gay Arabs and gay Palestinians, this is well worth watching to the end.
