Russia invaded Afghanistan for complex reasons relating to China / Pakistan and the USA - Suffice to say their machinations became unhinged
The US Invasion was to dismantle AQ and remove the Taliban , they got half of what they wanted and lost in the end to the Taliban
Complex ideas by Russia and the US mostly achieved nothing

A dozen worshippers killed in Kabul mosque bombing
Kabul police say an explosion killed 12 people in Friday prayers for the Eid al-Fitr holiday during a ceasefire, prompting the Taliban to denounce the attack, which no-one has claimed responsibility for.

US vacates key Afghan base; pullout target now 'late August'
WASHINGTON (AP) - Nearly 20 years after invading Afghanistan to oust the Taliban and hunt down al-Qaida, the U.S. military has vacated its biggest airfield in the country, advancing a final withdrawal that the Pentagon on Friday said will be completed by the end of August.
