We had friend from Turkey who used to come to the latin dance parties back in the late 1990s. A Black woman. She liked to dance cumbia, and was interested in the history of the dance. There are lots of ways to dance it, but when she danced cumbia, she would keep one leg in place while she moved around. Not having to move your feet so much makes it an easy dance for old folks. According to her, one foot is kept in place when dancing cumbia because it is supposed to be chained to the deck. I've seen reference to this online in historical accounts. 

I don't know much about the food in Turkey, but when Turkish guards beat up demonstrators in Washington DC, that's a bit much for me, being somewhat disrespectful of the local culture here in the USA. It's not really a good look when it comes to winning hearts and minds.
