The 1755 Lisbon quake was the one that shook up Voltaire and made him question the existance of God. The quake is mentioned in his novel Candide which was turned into music by Leonard Bernstein. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMIzHnyuiNY

At the time of the quake, it was believed that God let people die who were not good but how could Lisbon have so people who were not good? The devastation was that severe.
