John,

never heard any commens to that effect. Usually, anyone worth shooting with GM-94 or RPO-A is worth shooting twice, and certainly not worth hearing complains of if captured alive.

I only ever heard of the blast kill radius, not the lethal range, let alone against people wearing protection. Thank you for that information.

It seems to me that the Russians have put a lot more thought into designing and purchasing equipment designed for some of the most dangerous fighting, namely house to house. Here in the West we just give our soldiers some more armour and maybe a new bullet. But that is about as far as it goes.

Stalingrad - Berlin - Grozny.

The Russians have a wealth of experience in urban warfare and aren't shy about taking its lessons to heart.

PTL,

It's almost funny you mentioned madsen feed system and bullpups. A friend and fellow tinkerer and I were talking just an hour ago about the madsen feed system to make a working belt pup. (I really should trademark or copyright © that term since it's a very evocative term to those familiar with the military small arms world haha)

Though I would absolutely love to see a FABRL based projectile in a polymer with metallic base case or stainless or any other advanced semiconventional light weight low bulk case options and a 5.56 diameter projectile possibly with a driving band that sheds just past the muzzle brake. (yes i have two or three specific ideas on making that work)

I'd then mate it with an Ares Olin AIWS near clone! When I consider that combination the possibilities excite me quite a bit. Especially with the newer materials both polymer and synthetic fibers that are available and now just crazy cheap in even low volume. (Plus you can go a little more Russian in cartridge taper without creating issues for yourself because of the belt that the rounds run in.)

I think there is more to it than that.

The Russians seem willing to develop specialist weapons for even small niches. Just look at things like underwater rifles and silent grenade launchers.

Whereas the west seems obsessed with standardising on a handful of designs.

They have designers, the west doesn't. There is an almost endless level of innovation available to be directed at a problem, no matter how minor.

This is probably my favourite Russian gadget, the OTs 38 silent revolver with integral laser sight.

The round has been a round for decades, but this gun is relatively recent.

Leave it to the Russians to make a revolver that has a barrel aligned to the bottom chamber that actually looks pretty. Unlike the Chiappa Rhino which I find hideous.

Howa Type 96 AGL

Type 96 40mm AGL
Developed by Howa Industries, Type 96 AGL were adopted by JGSDF sometime around 1996, then became the main armament of Type 96 wheeled APC.
Type 96 AGL can be mounted on a tripod, firing anti-personnel/anti-armour grenades. It's belt feeded, can be fired in single shot or fully automatic. Type 96 AGL fires 40mm×56 HEDP grenades, which were developed by Osaka Metal Industries, non-interchangable with US 40mm×53. In 2011 Fuji fire drills, Type 96 AGL were seen equipped with red-dot sight.

Interesting, thanks - that one had passed me by. Do you have any ballistic data?

Seems odd, but info on Japanese weapons is far harder to find than on Chinese ones.
